Moldova is small, cheap, and geopolitically interesting in ways your eSIM has to notice. The EU-Adjacent Problem: What Roaming Actually Costs Here
Moldova signed an EU Association Agreement in 2014, became a candidate country in 2022 and opened formal accession negotiations in 2024 — but as of 2026 it's still not in the EU or the EEA, and 'Roam Like at Home' does not automatically apply. What that means in practice: your Romanian, Polish, German or any other EU home plan may still charge per-day roaming for Moldova (typically €4-8) unless your specific operator has voluntarily added Moldova to its inclusive bundle. Some — like Orange Romania, given the operator's presence on both sides of the border — have. Many haven't. Check your specific plan's country list before crossing at Leușeni or landing at KIV, because 'my EU plan should cover it' is exactly the assumption that produces the surprise bill. Real-world 5G in central Chișinău runs 200-400 Mbps; 4G in the countryside and along the wine cave routes typically holds 20-50 Mbps. Travel eSIMs route through Orange or Moldcell depending on the plan.
Transnistria (Tiraspol, Bender) is a separate cellular world
The de facto Transnistrian territory east of the Dniester has its own mobile operator — IDC (Interdnestrcom) — that is not connected to Moldova's national networks in the roaming sense a traveller expects. Coverage from Moldova's Orange/Moldcell reaches parts of Bender and Tiraspol thanks to spillover from right-bank towers near the river, but is unreliable. Your Moldova eSIM may show 'no service' or bill roaming rates on the IDC network depending on the plan. If you're doing a Transnistria day-trip (Tiraspol tour, Bender fortress), plan for offline maps and expect connectivity to be patchy. This is not a network failure — it's the political reality on the ground.
Chișinău and KIV Airport
Chișinău International Airport (KIV) sits 13 km southeast of the city — a 20-minute taxi via Bolt or Yandex Go, both of which operate here. The city is walkable in the centre — Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard, the Nativity Cathedral, the Triumphal Arch, the National History Museum, Valea Morilor park — and Orange 5G covers the walk cleanly. Ștefan cel Mare Park in the evening is the local promenade. The centre restaurants and cafés — La Placinte, Torro Steakhouse, Tucano Coffee — cluster along the main boulevard and the cross-streets. Chișinău is one of the cheapest capitals in Europe by a wide margin, which combined with visa-free access for Turkish citizens (90 days) makes it a real short-break destination that doesn't get the marketing budget it deserves.
Comrat and Gagauzia — a Turkish-linked side trip
Gagauzia, the autonomous region 100 km south of Chișinău, is home to the Gagauz people — an Orthodox Christian Turkic community whose language is closely related to Turkish. For Turkish visitors this is a genuinely fascinating side trip: Gagauz is mutually intelligible with Turkish, Comrat has a small but real Turkish cultural presence, and it's a two-hour bus from the capital. Orange 4G covers Comrat and the main road. It's the kind of trip most international travel guides never mention.
The Wine Cave Country: Cricova, Mileștii Mici, Purcari
Moldova is one of the world's densest wine-producing countries per capita, and it holds two Guinness records for the sheer scale of its underground wine cellars. Cricova, 15 km north of Chișinău, offers 120 km of tunnels that you tour by golf cart with a driver, wine tasting stops carved into the limestone. Mileștii Mici, further south, holds the world's largest wine collection by Guinness — over 1.5 million bottles across 55 km of galleries. Purcari, in the southeast near the Ukrainian border, is the country's most historic estate — its Negru de Purcari was reportedly Queen Victoria's Moldovan wine of choice. Signal at Cricova and Mileștii Mici underground is essentially none (they're wine cellars carved 60-80 metres below ground); on the surface at the visitor centres Orange 4G/5G works normally. WhatsApp with the driver you booked outside worked before you went underground; it'll work again when you come back up.
Getting In: KIV, Bucharest Bus, Iași Border, Ukraine Route
Four practical routes. Chișinău International (KIV) is the main gateway — Turkish Airlines from Istanbul (daily), LOT via Warsaw, Wizz Air from Budapest and Vienna, FlyOne (Moldovan carrier) across Europe. Overland from Bucharest is a 6-hour FlixBus or an 8-hour train via Iași. Iași (Romania) → Ungheni (Moldova) is a common overland entry — the border at Sculeni is straightforward. Overland from Ukraine (Odesa) has been affected by the war since 2022 and current-state checking is essential. On any arrival, a working eSIM before you clear immigration means faster onward navigation — the Bolt app, currency-conversion apps and WhatsApp with your host all need data from the taxi rank onward.
When a Moldova eSIM Makes Sense
The specific cases: a Chișinău weekend or wine tour for any non-EU traveller (Turkish visitors especially — Turkish carriers charge daily roaming for Moldova) or for EU-plan holders whose home operator hasn't added Moldova to inclusive bundles. A business trip to Chișinău for a week or more. A Bucharest → Chișinău → Odesa overland leg where per-country stacking gets expensive fast. A wine-country week based at Purcari or Cricova. If your trip crosses Ukraine or extends into a wider Eastern European route, an East-Europe or Balkans multi-country plan is often the cleaner buy. For Transnistria day-trips, no single-country plan handles it cleanly — expect intermittent connectivity regardless of what you buy.
