Poland's two main destinations sit 300 km apart and offer very different experiences. Warsaw is the reconstructed capital — the Old Town rebuilt after WWII (now UNESCO-listed for that specific reconstruction), the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the Vistula riverfront, the Palace of Culture and the Wilanów summer palace. It's also the fintech and IT capital of Central Europe, home to a growing digital nomad and expat community. Krakow is the medieval city that survived WWII largely intact — the Wawel Castle, the vast Rynek Główny (Europe's largest medieval market square), the Kazimierz district. Poland's eastern flank has three politically sensitive borders that affect travel planning. The Belarusian border has been effectively closed to routine tourism since 2020 and the humanitarian and security situation makes it a non-consideration for travel; Polish authorities also maintain restricted zones along parts of the border. The Kaliningrad exclave (Russia) sits above the northeastern corner — legally reachable via specific crossings but with restricted access since 2022. The Ukrainian border remains open at multiple crossings for civilian traffic but is meaningfully slower than pre-war; Rzeszów and Przemyśl in southeastern Poland have become important logistics hubs.
