Kazakhstan trips fall into three shapes — an Almaty long weekend (often paired with skiing at Shymbulak), a city combination of Almaty and Astana, or a Silk Road route that continues on to Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan.
Almaty long weekend (3–5 days)
For a fly-in-fly-out Almaty trip with Kok-Tobe, Medeu, maybe a ski day at Shymbulak, and Charyn Canyon on one long day, 3–5 GB covers Yandex Go, Google Maps, WhatsApp and photo uploads. A 15-day 5 GB plan runs around $5–8.
Almaty + Astana combination (7–10 days)

Activating at the Airport

The Yandex Go and Kaspi.kz reality
Yandex Go dominates ride-hailing in Almaty and Astana. Book it before you clear arrivals to skip the airport touts — a signalled eSIM makes this trivial. Kaspi.kz is the local super-app for payments and works over data seamlessly; many restaurants accept only Kaspi QR or card. A working eSIM connection is what makes both apps genuinely useful throughout the trip.
Internet filtering and VPNs
Some international sites and apps face intermittent slowdowns or blocks at the carrier level — every operator applies the same restrictions.
