Orange Jordan (part of France Telecom) covers 97%+ of the country on 4G and has 5G expanding across urban Jordan; its rural footprint is strong. Umniah (Bahrain-based Batelco) is the cheapest of the three and fine inside Amman, Irbid and Zarqa — but noticeably weaker at Petra, Wadi Rum and along the Dead Sea highway, which is a genuine problem if your travel eSIM routes only through Umniah. Jordan is not in any regional roaming agreement — your home carrier will bill you per day without an eSIM.

Petra and Wadi Musa
Petra site itself has patchy signal — the Siq walk, the Monastery hike, the High Place of Sacrifice all have thin coverage. Wadi Musa town (where you stay) has strong Zain and Orange 4G. Your Jordan Pass QR needs to be pre-loaded (or in Google Wallet) because signal drops as you descend the Siq.
Wadi Rum Bedouin camps
Along the main access road from Rum village to the visitor centre, signal is functional. Once you're on 4x4 tours deep in the protected area, Zain holds up best but drops in the deeper valleys. Most Bedouin camps have satellite Wi-Fi as a backup; some have cellular boosters. Download offline Google Maps for the entire southern desert before you head in.
Dead Sea and Aqaba
The Dead Sea resort strip (Marriott, Kempinski, Mövenpick) has strong 4G on all three operators. Aqaba city — the airport, the corniche and the dive centres at South Beach — has 4G and Zain 5G is rolling out. Bethany Beyond the Jordan (baptism site) and Mount Nebo along the way have good coverage.

Jordan trips fall into three shapes — a Petra long weekend, the classic Jordan loop (Amman + Petra + Wadi Rum + Dead Sea + Aqaba), or a Levant combination including Israel or Egypt.
Petra long weekend (3–5 days)
For a fly-in-fly-out Petra trip (often paired with a night in Wadi Rum), 3–5 GB covers Google Maps on the drive, WhatsApp with the guide, Jordan Pass display, and photo uploads. A 15-day 5 GB plan runs around $6–9.
Classic Jordan loop (7–10 days)
Amman → Jerash → Madaba → Dead Sea → Petra → Wadi Rum → Aqaba. 5–10 GB with 15- or 30-day validity fits — daily uploads at each site, Careem in Amman, Careem-less WhatsApp taxis further south, and heavy Google Maps use across the Desert Highway.
Levant or Red Sea combo (10+ days)
Adding Israel (via the Allenby Bridge or Wadi Araba crossings) or Egypt/Sinai adds meaningful data use across borders. A 20 GB plan or an Ireland + neighbouring-country combo eSIM is comfortable. Remember that Jordan eSIMs stop at the border — plan a separate Israel or Egypt profile.
Activating at the Airport
The safest workflow is boring on purpose: buy the plan a day or two before your flight on reliable home Wi-Fi, scan the QR code, install the eSIM profile and label it 'Jordan'. Typical 4G speeds in Amman and Aqaba run 25–50 Mbps; 5G in central Amman easily hits 300+ Mbps. The regulator is the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).
The Umniah warning
If your travel eSIM lists only Umniah as its Jordanian partner, avoid it for anything beyond Amman. Traveller reports across 2025-2026 consistently note weak-to-absent Umniah signal at Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. Look for plans that name Zain or Orange (or auto-switch between the three) — Petra to Wadi Rum without signal is a genuine problem when you need Jordan Pass display and Google Maps.
Wadi Rum reality check
Signal in the deep Wadi Rum protected area drops out on both 4G and 5G on all networks — this is the desert, not a network failure. Most Bedouin camps have Wi-Fi via satellite for guest use; download offline Google Maps of the whole southern desert before the 4x4 tour, and keep your Jordan Pass and camp confirmation offline-accessible.
Common Mistakes Travellers Make
Four patterns come up repeatedly. First: buying a cheap Umniah-only tourist SIM at the airport, then losing signal at Petra when the map matters most. Second: not enabling data roaming on the eSIM profile — travel eSIMs are technically roaming on the local network, so the setting must be on even though there's no roaming charge. Third: not downloading the Jordan Pass QR before the Siq walk — the signal drops as you descend and the Petra entry needs the QR displayed at the gate.
