Out of the 232 destinations where we list eSIM products the United Kingdom has the lowest price per gigabyte of any of them, which makes the interesting question here not what to pay but how to read the coverage figures you will see quoted. There is no separate London, Manchester, Edinburgh or Glasgow eSIM, and the same purchase covers all four. If you searched for a Manchester eSIM or an Edinburgh eSIM, these are the plans. Read the 84 Per Cent, Not the 96 Per Cent
Ofcom publishes some of the most carefully qualified coverage data of any regulator, and the qualifications are the point. Two numbers get quoted for United Kingdom 4G coverage, and the one that applies to you is the smaller one. Ofcom names the four main mobile network operators as EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three, and notes that every other UK provider runs on one of those four networks.
Why the smaller number is yours
In its Connected Nations update of 13 May 2026, Ofcom reported that 84 percent of the UK landmass is predicted to have good 4G geographic coverage from all mobile network operators, up three percentage points, while coverage from at least one operator reaches 96 percent. Those describe different things. The 96 percent figure is only useful if you can choose your operator based on where you are standing. Since no supplier tells us which network a travel plan uses, and you therefore cannot choose, the figure that describes your actual situation is 84 percent. Plan around that one.
The 5G picture, with its own spread
The same update reports that in the six months to January 2026, 5G coverage outside premises rose by at least five percentage points for every operator, with individual operator coverage now between 76 and 94 percent, and coverage from all operators rising from 47 to 64 percent. For 5G standalone specifically, coverage outside premises ranges between 49 and 85 percent across the three operators that have deployed it. Note the phrase outside premises, and note that Ofcom reports these at stated confidence levels rather than as flat assertions. That is a regulator being careful, and it is worth matching that care when you read it.
Where Even Ofcom Stops
The United Kingdom has the best documented coverage of anywhere in this comparison. It still does not answer every question a visitor has.
Landmass is not footpath
Geographic coverage of the landmass is a strong measure, far better than the population measures most countries publish. It is still modelled at a resolution that will not tell you about a specific glen in the Highlands, a valley in Snowdonia, or the middle of Dartmoor. Those are the places where United Kingdom visitors actually lose signal, and the honest answer is to download offline maps before walking.
Indoors is a separate question
The 5G figures above are explicitly for coverage outside premises. Indoor coverage is measured separately and is generally worse, particularly in older stone buildings, which the United Kingdom has rather a lot of. If you are relying on data inside a rural cottage or a thick walled hotel, expect less than the outdoor figure suggests.
Sizing in the Cheapest Market We Sell
When data costs under thirty cents a gigabyte, the usual careful sizing advice stops being worth the effort.
Buy generously, it costs almost nothing
The difference between a small bundle and a large one here is a few dollars. Take the large one. The time you would spend optimising is worth more than the saving, and running out in a rural area is a genuine nuisance.
Watch the day count instead
Since price is barely a constraint, the thing to get right is validity. Calendar days run from activation regardless of use, so match the plan to the trip with a day of margin rather than shaving it exactly.
Two Checks and a Border Question
Three things decide whether the plan you bought is the plan you can use, and none of them can be fixed after you land.
Phone, profile, days
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked, which is the single most common reason a purchase turns out to be unusable. Install the profile at home while you still have a connection you trust: installation and activation are separate steps, so it does not start the validity period. Then match the day count to the trip with a day of margin, because validity runs in calendar days from activation rather than days of use. The Republic of Ireland is a separate country and needs its own plan.
No UK Number, and What Else
These are data plans. Two consequences follow, and they cover most of what people ask afterwards.
Calls, messages and your own number
Calls and texts over the mobile network are not included, and none of these plans gives you a United Kingdom number. If you need a UK number, for a booking system or a verification code, this is not the product for that. Internet calling works normally. Your home SIM can stay active for your own number with data roaming off.
Tethering, and what happens when it runs out
Tethering works and draws on the same allowance, so a laptop will move through a bundle much faster than a phone will. When the data is gone the connection simply stops, with no per megabyte charge afterwards. Buying a replacement needs a connection, which is the awkward part, so installing a second small plan before you travel is cheap insurance: an installed plan costs nothing until you activate it.
