Iraq is one of the more expensive data markets we sell, and twice a year the internet is switched off on purpose. Both are things you should know before you buy. Here is the whole picture. Iraq Is an Expensive Data Market. Here Is the Number.
People search for the price of an Iraq SIM more than almost anything else about the country, so we will put it plainly rather than bury it. The best rate on this page is about 1.08 dollars per gigabyte. For comparison, on our own Turkey page the best rate is about 0.41 dollars, and the same supplier that sells Turkey data at that rate charges about 8.09 dollars a gigabyte for Iraq. Iraq is not a market where you will find a bargain, and any page promising you one is describing a plan it has not priced.
What this means for how much you buy
In a cheap market the sensible advice is to buy a generous bundle and stop thinking about it. In Iraq the opposite applies. Work out what you actually need, buy close to it, and top up if you run short. The difference between a well chosen 5 GB plan and a careless 20 GB one is real money here.
Why we are not explaining the cause
We can measure what our suppliers charge us. We cannot see why they charge it, because wholesale roaming agreements are not published. Explanations you will read elsewhere about infrastructure or licensing costs are plausible and unsourced, so we are leaving that question alone rather than repeating a guess.
Your Data Will Stop During Exam Season, and It Is Not Your eSIM
Iraq shuts off internet service nationwide during national school examinations, to prevent cheating. This is a government instruction to the networks, not a fault in any SIM or eSIM, and no supplier can work around it. It is the single most common reason a traveller thinks their eSIM has failed in Iraq.
When and for how long
The shutdowns fall on exam mornings and currently run about 90 minutes, from 6:00 to 7:30 local time. The Communications Ministry cut them to that length in August 2025 after sustained criticism. Exam rounds cluster in the late spring and early summer. To take a documented example, the Internet Society recorded a national shutdown on the morning of 13 June 2026, part of a series running to 4 July 2026.
Erbil and Sulaymaniyah run separate dates
Erbil and Sulaymaniyah run their own exam shutdowns on separate dates from Baghdad. Being in the north does not mean you avoid them, it means you are on a different calendar.
What to do about it
Nothing dramatic. If you are travelling between May and July, do not schedule a call or a check-in for early morning, and download anything you need the night before. Service returns on its own. No competitor will tell you this, because it sounds like a reason not to buy. It is not. It is a reason to plan your morning.
Coverage: Baghdad, the South, and the Kurdistan Region
Three operators carry the country: Zain Iraq, Asiacell and Korek Telecom, the last headquartered in Erbil. Your eSIM will attach to one of them and we cannot tell you which. What follows is a general expectation based on where people live and what the terrain does. It is not an operator coverage map, because suppliers do not publish per-region coverage for wholesale plans, so treat it as guidance rather than a guarantee.
Cities are well covered
Baghdad, Basra, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Mosul and Najaf all have dense mobile networks. For a trip that stays in cities and on the main roads between them, coverage will not be your problem.
The Kurdistan Region
Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Duhok are well served. In the mountains north and east of them, signal can drop between valleys. If you are driving the mountain routes rather than staying in the cities, download your maps first.
The western desert and remote south
Anbar's desert stretches and the emptier parts of the south are covered along the roads and around the towns. Away from those, expect gaps.
Kurdistan is not a separate destination
Some travellers look for a Kurdistan eSIM as a separate product. No supplier catalogue we carry lists one. An Iraq plan is what covers Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Duhok. If you see a plan sold specifically as Kurdistan, check which places it actually covers before you buy it.
Buying Enough Data in an Expensive Market
This matters more in Iraq than in a cheap market, because overbuying costs you several times what it would elsewhere. The figures below are our estimate from typical usage patterns, not a measurement.
A week of ordinary use
Maps, messaging, translation and photographs run to roughly 3 to 5 GB over a week for most people. At the best rate on this page that is about four to five dollars of data. At the most expensive supplier it is closer to forty. The supplier you pick matters more here than the size you pick.
Turn off automatic backup before you fly
Automatic photo backup and app updates over mobile data will empty a small plan in days. In a market at one dollar a gigabyte and up, this single setting is worth more than any discount code.
About unlimited
Twenty-two of the 43 Iraq plans we carry are sold as unlimited, and all of them come from the two more expensive suppliers. Read the fair use terms, because most unlimited plans slow down after a daily threshold. Where the supplier publishes that threshold it appears in the plan detail.
Steps Before Departure and on Arrival in Baghdad
Three checks, none of which takes longer than a minute.
Check the handset first
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. Dial star hash 06 hash. If an EID appears alongside the IMEI, the phone supports eSIM.
Install before you fly
Install the profile while you still have working internet at home. Most plans begin counting when the eSIM first attaches to a network in Iraq rather than when you install it, but the plan detail says which. This matters more in Iraq than elsewhere, because airport wifi is not something to count on.
Your own number keeps working
The eSIM adds a data line. Your usual SIM stays in the phone and keeps receiving calls and texts on your normal number. Leave data roaming switched off on your home line so it cannot quietly bill you, which in this region can be expensive.
