eSIM Netherlands Plans and Prices
A Netherlands eSIM gives your phone mobile data from the moment you land at Schiphol, without a local SIM card and without your home carrier's roaming rates. It installs before you fly and switches on when the phone reaches a Dutch network, while your usual number stays in the phone. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Eindhoven share one country plan, so a search for eSIM Amsterdam leads to the same products listed above. No travel eSIM comes with a Dutch phone number, which is the most common question about this destination. The sections below cover which plan fits which trip, how internet in the Netherlands works on a travel eSIM, and what to check before you buy.
Internet in the Netherlands With an eSIM
Your phone attaches as a visiting device to one of the national networks run by KPN, VodafoneZiggo and Odido. Dutch rules require operators to cover at least 98 percent of the territory of every municipality, with a minimum outdoor download speed of 8 Mbps. The Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur checks this in the field, and in its published round across eighteen municipalities all three operators passed. Because the floor applies per municipality, rural Friesland and Zeeland fall under the same rule as central Amsterdam. The rule is measured outdoors, so thick walls in old canal houses can still weaken the signal inside. Data roaming in the Netherlands is normally included for visitors whose plan comes from another EU or EEA country under roam like at home rules. Travelers from outside Europe pay their own carrier's roaming rates instead, which is where an eSIM makes the clearest difference. Cell phone service in the Netherlands on your normal number carries on, with incoming calls and texts billed under your home carrier's terms. A Netherlands plan stops at the border, so a day trip to Antwerp or Dusseldorf needs a Europe plan that lists Belgium and Germany. Video calls home over messaging apps run normally, since they need nothing more than data.
Best eSIM for the Netherlands
The best eSIM for the Netherlands depends mostly on how long you stay, because the network is dense almost everywhere. Maps, transit apps, messaging and photos use roughly 3 to 5 GB a week for most travelers, and heavy video can double that. Roamify, Airalo and Telcovision all list a Netherlands eSIM unlimited data plan, the easy choice if you stream on the train. Read the fair use note on any unlimited card, since speeds usually drop once a daily allowance is used up. Esimaccess has no unlimited option here, yet its plans run from one day to six months and reach the largest data sizes on the page. Telcovision plans stretch to a full year, which suits students spending a semester in Leiden or Groningen. Airalo runs from three days to a month, a comfortable fit for a city break with a day out to the tulip fields. Roamify starts at a single day, so a layover with a quick canal walk is covered without overbuying. A Netherlands travel eSIM rarely needs to be large, since free wifi is common in hotels, cafes and museums. If you guess too small, an e-SIM for the Netherlands can simply be followed by a second plan from this page.
Buy an eSIM for the Netherlands
To buy an eSIM for the Netherlands, first make sure your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. Typing star hash 06 hash shows an EID next to the IMEI on phones that can take one. Checkout gives you a QR code, and Schiphol has free wifi if you leave the scan to the last minute, though installing at home means you land connected. Most plans begin counting days when they first reach a Dutch network, and each product description states its own start rule. On arrival, switch the new line on, allow data roaming for that line only, and keep cellular data off on your home line. If it still refuses to connect, restart the phone, and failing that enter the APN by hand from our setup page. An eSIM card for the Netherlands carries no Dutch number, whatever any marketing suggests. A Netherlands SIM card from a supermarket or phone shop is the route when a Dutch number truly matters, such as for a rental contract. That Netherlands prepaid SIM card is a separate product we do not sell, and for bank codes you do not need it, because your home SIM keeps receiving them. For almost every visit, an eSIM in the Netherlands is the quicker route, working before you reach the train platform.
