Peru eSIM: Lima, Cusco, and Everything Between — At 3,400 Metres and Below
Peru is a country of extremes for a traveller's phone. Lima at sea level has excellent 4G/5G on all four networks; Cusco at 3,400 metres has surprisingly good coverage; Machu Picchu at 2,430 metres has functional signal at the site and at Aguas Calientes; the Amazon at Iquitos runs 4G at reasonable speeds; the Sacred Valley towns hold coverage; and the higher-altitude spots — Rainbow Mountain at 5,200 metres, Colca Canyon viewpoints, Titicaca islands — thin out but rarely disappear entirely. What matters more than any of that: Peru is not in any EU roaming zone, so your home carrier will charge $10-15 per day if you land without a plan. A Peru eSIM saves meaningful money for even a five-day trip, and the classic 10-14 day Cusco-Sacred Valley-Machu Picchu-Lake Titicaca-Arequipa route makes the case obvious. Turkish visitors have one of the most generous entries anywhere in the world here — 183 days visa-free — and while THY doesn't fly Lima direct, Iberia and LATAM via Madrid or the KLM/Air France Paris/Amsterdam routes are standard. Not in EU Roaming — This Page Is for Almost Everyone
The direct version: Peru is not in the EU, the EEA, or any European roaming zone. Every foreign traveller's home carrier treats Peru as chargeable international roaming. Typical daily rates: Turkish carriers $12-18 per day plus MB fees, UK post-Brexit £6-10 per day, US carriers $10-15 per day (some plans include Peru; check Verizon TravelPass or T-Mobile Magenta), German and other EU carriers €8-12 per day, Canadian Bell and Rogers add $15+ per day. A five-day Peru trip on home roaming easily runs $50-90; a Peru eSIM covers the same trip for $10-15 total. For any trip over three days, the savings pay for themselves before you reach Cusco. The one exception: a few US plans (T-Mobile Go5G and above, some Google Fi tiers) include Peru at no per-day charge — check before assuming.
Four Networks: Movistar, Claro, Entel, Bitel
Peru has a competitive four-network market that's unusual for a South American country. Movistar (Telefónica) is the historical incumbent with the widest national 4G LTE reach — solid across Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Arequipa, Puno and the coastal routes. Claro (América Móvil, Mexican-owned) is the strong number two with dense urban 4G/5G in Lima, Cusco and Arequipa and consistent coverage on the Machu Picchu route. Entel Peru (originally Chilean, now independent) launched Peru's first commercial 5G in Lima in 2022 and has expanded to Cusco and Arequipa; competitive urban plans. Bitel (Vietnamese Viettel group) is the price challenger with genuinely impressive rural and jungle reach — for Amazon and remote highland trips, Bitel is often the surprise winner. Real-world 5G in central Lima runs 200-500 Mbps on Entel and Claro; 4G LTE across the tourist route (Cusco to Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley towns, Arequipa) runs 20-60 Mbps. Travel eSIMs typically route through Claro or Movistar depending on the plan; Bitel is less commonly used for travel roaming but has the widest rural reach.
The 5G rollout is Lima-first — don't overpay for it
5G in Peru is real but concentrated in Lima and expanding to Cusco and Arequipa. On the classic Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu route you'll spend most of your data time on 4G LTE, which runs 20-60 Mbps and handles video calls, uploads and mapping without stress. Don't pay a premium for a '5G plan' unless most of your time is Lima-based — a solid 4G LTE plan on Claro or Movistar covers the actual tourist routes.
Lima, Cusco, and the Altitude Question
Lima at sea level and Cusco at 3,400 metres are two very different arrivals. Lima Jorge Chávez (LIM) sits west of the city in Callao, and the taxi or Uber to Miraflores or Barranco (the tourist and expat neighbourhoods) takes 40-60 minutes depending on traffic. Lima's essentials are the Miraflores clifftop (Larcomar, Parque del Amor), Barranco's bohemian streets and art walk, the historic centre with the Plaza Mayor, and the world-class food scene (Central, Maido, Kjolle sit near the top of the World's 50 Best list). Movistar and Claro 5G both work across the tourist zones. Cusco's Alejandro Velasco Astete (CUZ) sits at 3,400 metres — arriving directly from sea level often produces altitude sickness (soroche). Most guides recommend spending the first day resting, drinking coca tea, and not overexerting. Coverage in Cusco is dense on Movistar and Claro; the city's tight cobblestone centre around the Plaza de Armas, San Blas and San Pedro Market holds 4G/5G throughout.
The altitude and your device
The 3,400-metre altitude affects your phone battery (drains faster in cold high-altitude conditions) and your ability to focus on screen-heavy planning (soroche brain-fog is real). Download the offline maps, save the QR tickets and airline confirmations, and enable download-mode for your Google Maps of Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu ahead of the flight. Data coverage isn't the problem — being able to think about the interface can be.
Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and the Train Route
The classic route from Cusco to Machu Picchu is a full day and involves multiple transport handovers where a working data connection helps. Most travellers take a taxi or shared van from Cusco to Ollantaytambo (1h45m) in the Sacred Valley, then the PeruRail or IncaRail train to Aguas Calientes (1h30m). Coverage on the road to Ollantaytambo is good on Claro and Movistar; on the train through the canyon signal thins in stretches and comes back at each station. Machu Picchu itself has functional 4G at the site entrance and viewpoints — enough for the required entry-QR check and quick photos to the family group, though heavy uploads should wait for Aguas Calientes. The Sacred Valley towns of Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Chinchero, Urubamba and Yucay all have solid 4G coverage. If you're doing the Inca Trail (permitted in limited numbers, book months ahead), the trail itself is largely offline — download maps and expect coverage only at the campsites near settlements.
The Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) coverage reality
Vinicunca at 5,200 metres has patchy coverage — some Movistar reach along the ridge, thin elsewhere. The tour buses run from Cusco starting at 3-4 AM; download offline maps for the trail. WhatsApp with your tour group works from the parking area but not the summit approach.
The Amazon, Nazca, Titicaca — What Coverage Looks Like
Peru's non-Cusco headline destinations vary widely on the coverage side. Iquitos (Amazon gateway, reachable only by air or river) has surprisingly solid 4G in the town and jungle lodges within an hour of the city; deeper river trips into the Pacaya-Samiria reserve run offline. Puerto Maldonado, the southern Amazon gateway, has similar patterns — town coverage good, deep jungle offline. Nazca (the geometric ground drawings you see from a small plane) is small-town coverage — functional 4G in Nazca town and along the Panamericana Sur. Lake Titicaca at 3,812 metres has coverage in Puno and on the main road from Cusco; the Uros floating reed islands have surprisingly functional 4G (Bitel is often the best); Taquile and Amantaní further out have thinner coverage. Colca Canyon (Cabanaconde, Chivay) has 4G at the towns and thins deeper into the canyon. Bitel's rural strength genuinely shows in these remote areas.
The Turkish Visa Advantage — 183 Days No Visa
Peru offers Turkish citizens one of the world's most generous visa-free entries — 183 days (six months) without a visa. This is unusually long and makes Peru a viable destination not just for standard tourism but for extended visits, digital nomads, and travellers combining Peru with wider South American routes (Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador). Turkish Airlines doesn't fly Lima direct — the common routings are via Madrid (Iberia), Amsterdam (KLM), Paris (Air France), Miami (LATAM), or São Paulo (LATAM). For any Peru trip of five or more days a dedicated eSIM saves meaningful money against Turkish carrier daily rates. Digital nomads based in Lima's Miraflores or Cusco have grown as a small but real community in the 2020s — Entel 5G in Miraflores runs at 300-500 Mbps and is faster than most local coworking wired connections.
