Bangladesh Registers SIM Cards Biometrically. A Travel eSIM Is Bought Differently.
The mobile market in Bangladesh is cheap and the plans are plentiful, but the part worth understanding before you travel is how the country registers a SIM to a person, because that is what makes buying locally different from buying anywhere else in this region. Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna sit under a single purchase. Bangladesh is not divided into city plans, here or by any supplier we carry.

SIM Registration Here Runs Through a Biometric Platform
Bangladesh does not treat a SIM as an anonymous product. Registration is tied to identity through a central biometric system operated by the regulator, and the rules differ depending on which document you hold.
What the rules say, and where they come from
The Daily Star reported on 1 September 2021 that the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission had decided to cap SIMs registered against a passport, driving licence or birth certificate at two per person, against 15 for holders of a national ID card. The same report refers to the regulator operating a Central Biometric Verification Monitoring Platform, and notes that the platform does not hold matched data across a persons passport and birth certificate. In practical terms, a visitor arriving on a passport is in the two SIM category.
The tourist SIM that was proposed
The Daily Star also reported, on 12 December 2022, that the regulator was working on a dedicated tourist SIM: registered against a passport with a maximum of two, sold at operator retailers and customer care points at ports of entry, and issued in 7, 15 and 30 day blocks. That report described it as something being worked on rather than something launched, and no later official confirmation that it went live has been published. If a tourist SIM matters to your plans, treat it as unconfirmed rather than available.
Where the Published Record Runs Out
On other pages in this catalogue we quote a national coverage figure and say which body published it and when. For Bangladesh we are not doing that, and the reason is worth stating plainly rather than filling the gap with something vague.
No figure we could stand behind
We did not find a national coverage percentage from an official source that we could verify and date properly. Rather than reach for a number from a comparison site or estimate one from regional averages, we are leaving it out. A coverage figure with no traceable origin is worse than no figure, because it reads as authority it has not earned. If you find one quoted elsewhere, check who published it and when before relying on it.
What is certainly not published
Whatever the national figure turns out to be, nobody publishes signal data for the Sundarbans waterways, the haor wetlands in the northeast, the Chittagong Hill Tracts, or the char islands. Those are the places where connectivity actually becomes a question, and they are precisely the places no coverage statistic describes. Download offline maps before you leave a city, and do not assume a river route behaves like the road you came in on.
The Cheapest Data Here, and What That Changes
Bangladesh sits at the affordable end of everything we sell. That should change how you buy, and mostly in one direction.
Buy more than you think you need
Data is cheap per gigabyte here, so the saving from sizing tightly is small and the cost of running dry is a bad afternoon. Round up. This is the opposite of the advice we would give for an island market where the same decision costs many times as much.
Where the allowance actually goes
Ride hailing apps, maps and messaging are modest. Automatic photo and video backup is not, and neither is streaming on long road or rail journeys, of which Bangladesh has many. If your phone uploads everything by default, that single setting will dominate your usage.
Before the Dhaka Flight
Three things decide whether the plan you bought is the plan you can use, and none of them can be fixed after you land.
Phone, profile, days
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked, which is the single most common reason a purchase turns out to be unusable. Install the profile at home while you still have a connection you trust: installation and activation are separate steps, so it does not start the validity period. Then match the day count to the trip with a day of margin, because validity runs in calendar days from activation rather than days of use. Travel inside Bangladesh is not famous for running early, so leave the extra day.
What the Plan Will Not Do
These are data plans. Two consequences follow, and they cover most of what people ask afterwards.
Calls, messages and your own number
Calls and messages over the mobile network are not included on any Bangladesh plan we sell, and you do not get a local number. Internet calling works normally and is worth setting up before you arrive. Your home number stays reachable if you keep that SIM active alongside the travel plan, with data roaming turned off.
Tethering, and what happens when it runs out
Tethering works and draws on the same allowance, so a laptop will move through a bundle much faster than a phone will. When the data is gone the connection simply stops, with no per megabyte charge afterwards. Buying a replacement needs a connection, which is the awkward part, so installing a second small plan before you travel is cheap insurance: an installed plan costs nothing until you activate it.
