Buying a physical Unitel, Lao Telecom or ETL SIM at either airport is straightforward but takes twenty minutes with passport registration. An eSIM lands with you already on Unitel 4G. How a Laos eSIM Actually Works
An eSIM is a digital SIM your phone activates from a QR code — no plastic card, no swap. Laos has four main mobile operators. Unitel (majority state-linked, joint venture with Viettel) leads the market with the widest national coverage and the strongest signal in Luang Prabang and along the mountain roads. Lao Telecom (LTC, state-owned) is the second player with solid urban coverage. ETL and Star Telecom round out the market. Unitel is trialling 5G in Vientiane; most of the country runs on 4G LTE. Travel eSIMs typically route through Unitel because that's where the coverage lives outside the capital. Laos is not in any regional roaming agreement — your home carrier will bill you per day without an eSIM.
Compatible phones
Most phones from 2018 onward support eSIM: iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, Galaxy S20 and newer. Check the model number of any phone bought in China, Hong Kong or Japan — some regional variants lack the eSIM chip.
Keeping your home number
Your physical SIM stays in the tray for calls and SMS on your usual number. Vientiane, Loca and the border
Vientiane is walkable in the centre — Pha That Luang, Patuxai, the Mekong riverside — but Loca (the local ride-hail) and InDrive handle the runs to Wattay Airport and out to the Friendship Bridge crossing to Thailand. Unitel 5G is being trialled around the centre; Unitel 4G covers the city solidly.
Luang Prabang and the alms procession
Luang Prabang (UNESCO) has strong 4G on Unitel across the peninsula between the Mekong and the Nam Khan. The 6 AM alms procession runs along the main streets — respectful photography needs live data less than it needs quiet hands. Mount Phousi at sunset and the Royal Palace Museum during the day have full coverage. The road to Kuang Si Waterfalls (45 minutes south) has functional signal to the entrance.
Vang Vieng, tubing and the karst
Vang Vieng town has strong 4G. Tubing down the Nam Song and the balloon rides at sunrise are increasingly popular and increasingly Instagrammed — Unitel holds up in town and along the main tubing stretches. Backpacker cave routes and the Blue Lagoons further out thin above the treeline.
Pakse, the Bolaven Plateau and 4000 Islands
Pakse city has solid coverage on Unitel and Lao Telecom. The Bolaven Plateau coffee loop covers 300 kilometres of high-altitude farmland — signal thins between coffee estates but holds at the main viewpoints (Tad Fane, Tad Yuang). The 4000 Islands (Si Phan Don — Don Det, Don Khon) at the Cambodian border has 4G at the main guesthouse clusters and thins on the smaller islands.
Best Plans by Trip Length
Laos trips fall into three shapes — a Luang Prabang long weekend, a classic north-to-south loop, or a Mekong region combo with Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia.
Luang Prabang long weekend (3–5 days)
For a fly-in-fly-out UNESCO old town trip with Mount Phousi sunsets and Kuang Si Waterfalls, 3–5 GB covers Google Maps, WhatsApp with the guesthouse, and photo uploads. A 15-day 3 GB plan runs around $5–8.
North-to-south loop (10–14 days)
Vientiane → Vang Vieng → Luang Prabang → Nong Khiaw → Pakse → 4000 Islands. 10 GB with 30-day validity fits — daily uploads at each stop, guesthouse coordination, and Google Maps on the long overland or Laos-China Railway sections.
Mekong region combo (10+ days)
Adding Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai for the slow boat down the Mekong), Vietnam (Hanoi via Nong Khiaw) or Cambodia (via the 4000 Islands land crossing) pushes usage across borders. A 20 GB Laos plan handles the local leg; add separate profiles for each neighbouring country.
Activating at the Airport
The safest workflow is boring on purpose: buy the plan a day or two before your flight on reliable home Wi-Fi, scan the QR code, install the eSIM profile and label it 'Laos'. Leave the profile installed but disabled until you land. On arrival at Wattay (VTE), Luang Prabang (LPQ) or Pakse (PKZ), enable the Laos profile as your data line and turn on data roaming for it — this is required for travel eSIMs even though there's no roaming charge. Give it 30–90 seconds; your phone should register with Unitel or Lao Telecom. If not, toggle airplane mode once. Airport Wi-Fi at VTE is workable but the tuk-tuk pickup rank moves faster than the SIM counter.
Coverage, Speed and the Lao Networks
Unitel leads Laos on national coverage and is trialling 5G in Vientiane. Lao Telecom is a solid second in urban areas and along the main highways. ETL and Star Telecom are the price alternatives with narrower coverage. Typical 4G speeds in Vientiane and Luang Prabang run 15–40 Mbps; the Laos-China Railway corridor holds signal for most of the journey. The regulator is the Ministry of Technology and Communications.
The Laos-China Railway
The Vientiane-Boten railway (opened December 2021) has transformed north-south travel — Vientiane to Luang Prabang in under two hours instead of nine on the winding highway. Signal on the train is functional for most of the route; the tunnels drop connection briefly but the eSIM re-registers as you exit each one. Ticket QR display works reliably at both stations.
Slow boat from Thailand and the border crossings
The two-day slow boat from Huay Xai (across from Chiang Khong in Thailand) to Luang Prabang via Pakbeng is a classic entry to Laos. Signal on the Mekong drops out for stretches — download offline Google Maps of the whole northern Laos region before boarding. Border crossings at Huay Xai, Nong Khai (Vientiane) and Veun Kham (4000 Islands to Cambodia) all switch networks cleanly; your Laos eSIM stops the moment you cross.
Common Mistakes Travellers Make
Four patterns come up repeatedly. First: assuming your Thailand SIM works in Laos after crossing at Nong Khai — it doesn't, most Thai plans don't include Laos and roaming rates apply. Second: not enabling data roaming on the eSIM profile — travel eSIMs are technically roaming on the local network, so the setting must be on even though there's no roaming charge. Third: relying on signal for the slow boat down the Mekong — download offline maps and any needed guesthouse contacts before boarding at Huay Xai. Fourth: crossing into Cambodia at the 4000 Islands without a Cambodia plan — the Laos eSIM stops at the border and there's little signal to buy a new one for a few kilometres.
