Most of These Cards Cover More Than Austria, and Cost the Same

No supplier here publishes which of them a plan roams onto, and the field that would carry it is identical across every product in the catalogue. Austria is frequently described as one of Europe's leading 5G markets. That description is defensible, and it rests on a specific measurement that is worth reading properly.
Fourth in the EU, on one band
RTR reports Austria in fourth place across the EU for 5G coverage at 79.1 percent of households, and the figure is for the 3.4 to 3.8 GHz band specifically. That band carries the high capacity 5G most people mean when they say 5G, which is why it is the one measured. But it is not all 5G, and it is households rather than territory. A household measure in an alpine country will always look better than a map would.
What that means for a phone in a valley
Coverage measured by household counts where people live, and Austrian settlement follows the valleys. The passes, the plateaus above the tree line and the ski areas away from lifts are not described by that number, and nobody publishes a figure that describes them. We are not going to convert household coverage into a claim about a mountain, because they are different measurements. If you are walking or skiing off the main areas, download the route first.

An Austrian trip is usually some combination of a city, a train journey and a valley. Each behaves differently for data, and the middle one is the part people forget.
Trains are where the allowance goes
Long rail journeys are exactly when people stream, and Austrian journeys between the cities and the mountains are long enough to matter. If you expect to watch anything on the train, that single habit will dominate your usage more than a week of maps and messaging will.
Cheap enough to overbuy on purpose
At under a dollar a gigabyte on every full size card here, the saving from sizing tightly is small. Round up, particularly if your trip includes mountain days where topping up on a weak connection would be awkward.

Three things decide whether the plan you bought is the plan you can use, and none of them can be fixed after you land.
Phone, profile, days
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked, which is the single most common reason a purchase turns out to be unusable. Install the profile at home while you still have a connection you trust: installation and activation are separate steps, so it does not start the validity period. What Austria Plans Exclude

Calls, messages and your own number
Calls and messages over the mobile network are not included on any Austria plan we sell, and none provides an Austrian number. Tethering, and what happens when it runs out
Tethering works and draws on the same allowance, so a laptop will move through a bundle much faster than a phone will. When the data is gone the connection simply stops, with no per megabyte charge afterwards. Buying a replacement needs a connection, which is the awkward part, so installing a second small plan before you travel is cheap insurance: an installed plan costs nothing until you activate it.
