A Market of 53 Million Active Cards
The Polish regulator publishes an annual report on the state of the telecommunications market, and two of its headline numbers are worth putting side by side.
What the regulator reported for 2024
The Urzad Komunikacji Elektronicznej, UKE, reported that the number of active SIM cards rose 1.6 percent year on year to 53.2 million. Over the same period, operator revenues from mobile service reached 16.5 billion zloty, up 8.1 percent. Put those together and revenue grew roughly five times faster than card numbers, which means the average card is generating more than it did. That is the direction of travel in the Polish market.
Which network your plan uses
Unknown, as everywhere in this catalogue. Suppliers do not publish which local operator a plan roams onto, and the field that would carry it is identical across every product in the catalogue. Poland has a competitive market with several networks, and we cannot tell you which of them you will get.
Registration Is Why Buying Locally Is Slower Here
Poland is not a country where you buy a prepaid card and it works. This catches out visitors who assume the EU makes everything frictionless, and it is the practical reason most short stay travellers do not bother with a local SIM.
What the rule requires
Mandatory registration of prepaid cards was introduced by the Polish anti terrorism act and took effect on 25 July 2016. According to a summary published by the Polish consultancy Zalewski Consulting, registration requires a name, surname and PESEL number, or where a person does not hold one, the name and number of another identity document. Non EU foreigners are required to give a passport number or residence card number. Cards bought after the law took effect remained inactive until registered, and previously active unregistered cards were deactivated after a deadline of 1 February 2017.
How firmly to take that
We are citing a consultancy summary of the legislation rather than the statute itself, and we are saying so rather than presenting it as a regulator statement. The substance, that a Polish prepaid card requires identity registration before it works, is consistent and long standing. If the exact document requirements matter to your plans, confirm them with the operator before you rely on this.
Sizing for a Country You Will Cross by Train
Poland is large, flat and extremely well connected by rail, and most trips involve several cities rather than one. That shapes usage more than trip length does.
Train hours are streaming hours
Warsaw to Krakow, Gdansk to Wroclaw and the routes between them are long enough that people watch something. If that is you, one habit will account for more of your allowance than a week of maps and messaging, and an unlimited plan becomes easier to reason about than a capped one.
Otherwise you will underuse it
Wifi is widespread in Polish accommodation, cafes and increasingly on trains, so a visitor doing city sightseeing will often finish a week having used a fraction of a mid sized bundle. Start modest unless you know you stream.

Three things decide whether the plan you bought is the plan you can use, and none of them can be fixed after you land.
Phone, profile, days
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked, which is the single most common reason a purchase turns out to be unusable. Install the profile at home while you still have a connection you trust: installation and activation are separate steps, so it does not start the validity period. Then match the day count to the trip with a day of margin, because validity runs in calendar days from activation rather than days of use. Central European routes cross borders easily, so check the plan if Czechia or Germany is on the list.
What Is Left Out
These are data plans. Two consequences follow, and they cover most of what people ask afterwards.
Calls, messages and your own number
None of these plans include calls or texts over the mobile network, and none gives you a Polish number. Internet calling works normally and covers almost every need. Your home SIM stays available for calls on your usual number as long as you leave it active and turn its data roaming off.
Tethering, and what happens when it runs out
Tethering works and draws on the same allowance, so a laptop will move through a bundle much faster than a phone will. When the data is gone the connection simply stops, with no per megabyte charge afterwards. Buying a replacement needs a connection, which is the awkward part, so installing a second small plan before you travel is cheap insurance: an installed plan costs nothing until you activate it.
