The Tonga eSIM Cards Carrying a 5G Label Point at a Network That Covers About Thirty Per Cent of One City
Tonga is one of the few destinations where a 5G label on a card can be traced back to a dated operator announcement rather than left as an unsourced claim. It can also be sized, and the size is the point: the network exists, it is recent, and it covers a fraction of the capital. Airalo and Esimaccess have split the shelf in an unusual way, with Airalo holding every 5G label and Esimaccess holding every card that expires the next day. The kingdom cable history matters here too, because both of its undersea links were severed in 2022 and the replacement arrived only this year.
The Label Has a Dated Announcement Behind It, and a Small Footprint
Few destinations offer any way to check a 5G label against something official. Tonga does. One of its operators published the launch and then published the coverage, and both numbers are modest enough to be worth quoting exactly.
Six Sites in November 2024
On 29 November 2024 the operator announced that Digicel Tonga has launched six 5G sites today, naming Kolomotu'a, Fanga, Pili, Kolofo'ou, Ma'ufanga and Ma'ufanga Wharf. All six are in or beside the capital. That is the whole of the initial launch, published by the operator itself.
About Thirty Per Cent of One City by June 2025
On 25 June 2025 the same operator reported it had upgraded 15 mobile sites and that this provides 5G coverage to about 30% of Nuku'alofa's population. Nothing published extends that beyond the capital. The other operator makes no 5G claim on its own site, describing itself instead as having the most extensive cellular network in Tonga.
Airalo Holds Every 5G Label, Esimaccess Every Single-Day Card
Airalo lists uncapped cards and month-long blocks and puts a 5G label on all of them. Esimaccess lists a ladder of cards that expire after one day, plus a handful of longer ones, all labelled 4G.
The Split Is Almost Total
Every card in the local list carrying a 5G label belongs to the first brand, and every card lasting a single day belongs to the second. The only overlap is at thirty days, where each has an entry. So a buyer choosing between them is usually choosing between shapes rather than between prices for the same thing.
What the 5G Label Does and Does Not Buy
The label records the network type that brand assigns to its own plans. Given the coverage published above, it is worth having only for a stay inside the capital, and even there for a minority of it. Outside Nuku'alofa the label makes no difference that any published source supports.
The Best Rate in the Local List Belongs to a Card That Expires Tomorrow
Sorted by cost per gigabyte, the top of the table is not a monthly block. It is a ten-gigabyte Esimaccess card valid for a single day.
Ten Gigabytes in Twenty-Four Hours
It is the cheapest way to buy data in Tonga by rate and it is close to useless for an ordinary visit, because ten gigabytes is more than most people move in a day and the card is gone by the next morning. The twenty-gigabyte thirty-day card holds the second best rate and is the sensible version of the same idea.
Why the One-Day Ladder Exists at All
The same brand lists one, two, three, five and ten gigabyte cards, all valid for one day. Their rates get better as they get bigger, which is the opposite of what the small ones are for. For a cruise call or a single working day the smaller rungs make sense despite their rates.
Both Undersea Cables Were Cut in 2022 and the Replacement Landed This Year
Tonga connectivity is not an abstract question. In January 2022 the eruption and tsunami took the country off the international network, and the record of what broke and what has been rebuilt is unusually well documented by the funders.
What the Damage Assessment Recorded
A World Bank rapid damage assessment records that telephone and internet lines were cut at 6:40 pm due to damage to the 827 km long submarine fiber optic cable, and puts the international break approximately 37km offshore from Tonga. The Australian infrastructure financing facility states plainly that Tonga's international and domestic cables were severed.
What Was Completed in May 2026
On 26 May 2026 the Australian minister responsible announced the completion of a second international cable, the Tonga Hawaiki Cable Branch System, jointly funded by Australia and New Zealand. The funder describes it as a 383-kilometre long cable running to the existing cable landing station in Vava'u, and says it will provide critical redundancy for Tonga's undersea cable network. The current state of the domestic cable to the outer island groups is not something either government has published.
Nuku'alofa, Neiafu and Pangai Buy the Same Card
Nothing in the local list is scoped to an island group. Buying for the capital and buying for Vava'u pull the same cards, because every card is sold for the kingdom as a whole. A Nuku'alofa eSIM is not a separate product from one used in Ha'apai.
The Outer Groups Are Where the Published Record Runs Out
Neiafu in Vava'u and Pangai in Ha'apai lie hundreds of kilometres north of the capital. The 5G announcements name only sites around Nuku'alofa, and neither brand states which network its cards use, so what a card does in the outer groups cannot be established from published sources. The price, at least, does not change.
Four Companies Hold Telecommunications Licences, Not All of Them Mobile
The government communications department publishes its licence list, which makes the operator question answerable, provided the categories are read carefully.
What the Licence List Names
The department lists Tonga Communications Corporation, Digicel Tonga Limited, Tonga Cable Limited and TokoWireless Limited, under powers conferred by section 47 of the Communications Act 2015. One of those four is the undersea cable company rather than a retail mobile network, so the count of companies a visitor might actually connect to is smaller than four. Neither brand here states which one carries its cards.
