Four operators became three
Oi put its mobile arm up for auction in December 2020 and it was bought jointly by TIM, Telefonica and Claro for 16.5 billion reais, about 3.2 billion dollars. Brazil now has three national mobile networks instead of four.
What that means for a visitor
Fewer networks does not automatically mean worse service, and we are not going to claim it does. What it does mean is that older guides naming four Brazilian operators are out of date, and any page telling you to pick Oi is describing a network that no longer sells mobile service.
