What Is the Difference Between an Italian eSIM and an Italy eSIM?
Two of the most common searches about Italy are for an Italian eSIM and for iPhone setup, and they are asking different things. Here is what we sell, what the terms actually mean, and when you do not need to buy at all. Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples, Verona and Bologna carry no price of their own. Rome eSIM and Milan eSIM are search terms, not products. The product is an Italy plan, and it costs the same for either.
Compare Every Italy Plan Here
Eighty one plans for Italy. That is the number the plan list above shows, and it counts both Italy only plans and wider regional plans that include Italy, because you can buy either from this page. Figures come from the live plan list and change when suppliers reprice.
Roamify: the cheapest data, at 0.48 dollars per gigabyte
About 0.48 dollars per gigabyte at best value, the lowest rate on this page. Entry from 2.02 dollars, validity 1 to 30 days. Unlimited options available.
Airalo: the widest unlimited choice
More unlimited plans than anything else on this page. Entry from 6.00 dollars, about 1.30 dollars per gigabyte at best value, validity 5 to 180 days.
Esimaccess: the lowest entry price, 1.14 dollars
The lowest entry price on this page at 1.14 dollars. About 0.57 dollars per gigabyte at best value, validity 7 to 180 days. No unlimited option.
Telcovision: the outlier, from 16.24 dollars
Entry here starts at 16.24 dollars, more than ten times the cheapest entry on this page at 1.14.
Italy Reports 5G at 99.8 Per Cent. That Is Not the Number That Matters.
Italy's regulator, AGCOM, publishes coverage in its annual report, and the 2026 edition gives a figure most countries would envy. In Italian: Nel 2025, la copertura 5G ha raggiunto il 99,8% della popolazione. Nominal 5G reached 99.8 per cent of the population in 2025. Read the next paragraph before you draw a conclusion from that.
Nominal 5G and the band that carries the speed are different things
Seeing a 5G icon on your screen and getting 5G speed are not the same event. The capacity comes from the mid band, and AGCOM reports that separately: La copertura 5G nella banda 3.4-3.8 GHz aumenta di 5,1 punti percentuali su base annua, raggiungendo il 98,4% nel 2025. So mid band 5G reached 98.4 per cent, up 5.1 points in a year. The two numbers are close in Italy, which is the good news, and they are still measuring different things.
Rural Italy moved fastest
The largest change was outside the cities. AGCOM: Le dinamiche piu marcate si osservano nelle aree rurali, dove la copertura 5G in banda media aumenta di 14,7 punti percentuali (dal 79,4% al 94,1%). Rural mid band 5G went from 79.4 per cent to 94.1 per cent in a single year, a jump of 14.7 points. If you last visited rural Italy a few years ago, your memory of the signal is out of date.
What the report does not tell you
The annual report gives the percentages but does not state what counts as covered, and the AGCOM map service that would carry the methodology is offline. So these are the regulator's own figures, published without the rule behind them. They are also population figures, not land area, and Italy has a lot of mountain.
Four networks, not five
Italy now has four mobile network operators rather than five. Fastweb and Vodafone Italia became a single company on 1 January 2026, in the company's own words a partire dal 1 gennaio 2026 Fastweb S.p.A. E Vodafone Italia S.p.A. Diventano un'unica realta societaria sotto la denominazione di Fastweb S.p.A. The four are TIM, Fastweb, WindTre and Iliad. Brands such as Ho, Kena, Very Mobile, CoopVoce and Lycamobile run on those networks rather than their own.
An Italian eSIM Is Not the Same as an eSIM for Italy
People search for an Italian eSIM, an eSIM italiana, and an eSIM for Italy, and those are not interchangeable. The difference decides whether what we sell is right for you.
What we sell
A data plan that works in Italy. It connects through one of the Italian networks, it gives you working internet from the moment you land, and it costs a few dollars. It is not an Italian line and it does not give you an Italian phone number.
What an Italian line is
A subscription with an Italian operator, with an Italian number people in Italy can call, sold in Italy against an identity document. If that is what you need, for a job, a rental agreement or a local service that texts you a code, you have to buy it in Italy. We do not sell it and neither does any travel eSIM seller.
Which one you probably want
If you are visiting, the data plan. If you are moving, the Italian line. If you are not sure, the test is whether anything will need to send you an SMS at an Italian number. If nothing will, buy the cheap thing.
Setting Up an eSIM on an iPhone in Italy
iPhone setup comes up more for Italy than for any other destination we sell, so here it is in order. The steps are the same everywhere but the questions arrive here.
Check the phone will take it
Every iPhone from the XR and XS onwards supports eSIM. The exception that catches people is a handset locked to a carrier. Dial star hash 06 hash and if an EID appears alongside the IMEI, the hardware is ready. If you bought the phone on a contract, check the lock status before you buy a plan.
Install at home, activate in Italy
Add the plan in Settings under Mobile Service while you still have wifi, then leave it switched off until you land. Most plans start counting when the eSIM first attaches to an Italian network rather than when you install it, but check the plan detail because a few differ.
Label the lines
Name the new line Italy and your usual one Home. It takes ten seconds and it stops you sending a text from the wrong line or leaving data on the expensive one. Set the Italy line as the data line and leave your home line for calls.
If You Live in the EU You May Not Need to Buy Anything
If your phone plan comes from another EU or EEA country, roaming in Italy is normally included in your domestic allowance at no extra charge. Check that before comparing the cards above, because for many visitors it settles the question.
When it still makes sense to buy
If you are coming from outside the EU, if your home plan caps roaming data low, or if you are staying long enough to pass a fair use limit, buying here is cheaper than what your own operator charges. At the rates above a week of data costs about two dollars.
How Much Data a City Break Actually Burns
Italy is cheap for data and most visitors overbuy. The figures below are our estimate from typical usage patterns, not a measurement.
A week of ordinary use
Maps, messaging, translation and a lot of photographs come to roughly 3 to 5 GB over a week. At the best rate here that is a little over two dollars of data.
Museums and trains
Booking apps, QR tickets and audio guides are all light. The heavy thing is uploading video, and that is a choice rather than a necessity.
Turn off automatic backup before you fly
Automatic photo backup over mobile data will empty a small plan in days, and Italy is where people take more photographs than anywhere.
What to Settle Before You Pay for an Italy eSIM
Two things worth checking beyond the phone itself.
Your own number keeps working
The eSIM adds a data line. Your usual SIM stays in the phone and keeps receiving calls and texts on your normal number, so bank codes still arrive. Leave data roaming off on your home line so it cannot quietly bill you.
If it does not connect when you land
Switch the line on in your mobile data settings, check that data roaming is enabled for that line specifically, and restart the phone. If it still fails the APN may need setting by hand and our setup page lists the values.
