Do You Even Need a Spain eSIM if You Already Have an EU Plan?
Spain has almost the best mobile coverage in Europe and a lot of visitors who do not need to buy anything at all. Here is what is on sale, what the government measured, and when your own plan already covers you. A Barcelona eSIM and a Madrid eSIM are the same product, and it is this one. Airalo: the only unlimited option
The only unlimited plans on this page. Entry from 5.50 dollars, about 1.00 dollars per gigabyte at best value, and validity from five days out to 180. In our catalogue these are recorded under the local brand name Guay Mobile, which is why the plan cards and this list use different names for the same plans.
Esimaccess: the lowest entry price, 1.14 dollars
The lowest entry price on the page at 1.14 dollars, and about 0.57 dollars per gigabyte at best value, second only to Roamify. Validity runs from a week to 180 days. Best for a short top up rather than a long trip.
Telcovision: built for long stays
Validity from 30 days to a full year, the longest sold here, at about 1.04 dollars per gigabyte at best value. Entry is 11.04 dollars, the highest on the page, because the shortest plan it sells is already a month.
Spain Has Closed Its Rural Coverage Gap to Three Points
Spain publishes coverage figures and they are unusually good. The Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function released the 2025 broadband coverage figures on 6 May 2026, announced by the minister, Oscar Lopez, at an event in Patones outside Madrid. In Spanish: el 99,27% de la poblacion espanola ya dispone de cobertura 5G, alcanzando tambien al 96,13% en areas rurales. 5G reaches 99.27 per cent of the Spanish population, and 96.13 per cent of the rural population.
What the three point gap means for you
The ministry described the gap between urban and rural coverage as having fallen to three percentage points, a historic low. In practice that means the usual travel advice about losing signal outside cities applies less in Spain than almost anywhere. Andalusian villages, Galician coast roads and the Pyrenean valleys are far better served than the equivalent places in most countries.
What this figure does not tell you
Both figures count people, not land. Spain does not publish a land area coverage figure at all, so 99.27 per cent of the population is not a statement about 99.27 per cent of the map, and the rural number counts rural residents rather than rural terrain. Some coverage of this announcement summarised it as effectively the whole country. That is not what the ministry measured. Nobody publishes coverage for a specific hiking route or a stretch of coast, so we will not estimate it.
If You Live in the EU You May Not Need to Buy Anything
If your phone plan comes from another EU or EEA country, roaming inside the EU is normally included in your domestic allowance at no extra charge. Check that first, because for many visitors it answers the question before any card does.
When it still makes sense to buy
If you are coming from outside the EU, if your home plan has a low roaming data cap, or if you are staying long enough to exceed a fair use limit, an eSIM is cheaper than what your own operator will charge you. At the rates above, a week of data costs less than a coffee.
Getting an eSIM When You Have Already Landed
A common situation, and the reason it works is worth understanding before you rely on it. To install an eSIM you need an internet connection, and the eSIM is the thing you do not have yet.
The airport wifi route
Barajas in Madrid and El Prat in Barcelona both have free wifi, and it is good enough to install a profile. Buy, install, then switch the line on. It takes a few minutes.
Why installing before you fly is still better
Airport wifi sometimes wants a registration flow, and doing that with luggage after a flight is not when you want to discover the page will not load. Install at home, arrive connected.
What you cannot do
You cannot install an eSIM with no connection at all. If you are already in Spain with no data and no wifi, you need to find wifi somewhere before anything else works. That is true of every eSIM seller.
How Much Data If You Are Not Already Roaming
Spain is cheap for data, so the risk here is overbuying rather than running out. The figures below are our estimate from typical usage patterns, not a measurement.
A week of ordinary use
Maps, messaging, translation and photographs come to roughly 3 to 5 GB over a week for most people. At the best rate on this page that is under two and a half dollars of data.
City breaks use less than you think
A long weekend in Barcelona or Madrid rarely exceeds 2 GB unless you are streaming. Walking navigation is light and most restaurants and hotels have wifi.
Turn off automatic backup before you fly
Automatic photo backup over mobile data will empty a small plan in days, and Spain is a place where people take a lot of photographs.

Check the handset first
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. Dial star hash 06 hash. If an EID appears alongside the IMEI, the phone supports eSIM.
Your own number keeps working
The eSIM adds a data line. Your usual SIM stays in the phone and keeps receiving calls and texts on your normal number. Leave data roaming off on your home line.
If it does not connect
Switch the line on in your mobile data settings, check data roaming is enabled for that line specifically, and restart. If it still fails the APN may need setting by hand and our setup page lists the values.
