Portugal Has Extensive 5G, and the Cheapest Portugal eSIM Runs at 0.48 Dollars a Gigabyte
The single most common thing people ask us about Portugal is whether they can get 5G, and answering it honestly means separating two questions that are usually blurred together: what the country has built, and what any particular travel plan actually connects to. One page, two searches: Lisbon eSIM and Porto eSIM both resolve to the Portugal plans below.
Compare Every Plan for Portugal
Ninety four plans for Portugal. That is the number the plan list above shows, and it counts both Portugal only plans and wider regional plans that include Portugal, because you can buy either from this page. Figures come from the live plan list and change when suppliers reprice.
Roamify: the cheapest data, at 0.48 dollars per gigabyte
About 0.48 dollars per gigabyte at best value, the lowest rate on this page. Entry from 2.02 dollars, validity 1 to 30 days. Unlimited options available.
Airalo: the widest unlimited choice
More unlimited plans than anything else on this page. Entry from 5.50 dollars, about 0.95 dollars per gigabyte at best value, validity 5 to 180 days.
Telcovision: validity out to 365 days
This is the longest validity on the page. Entry from 11.04 dollars, about 1.04 dollars per gigabyte at best value. No unlimited option.
Esimaccess: the lowest entry price, 1.14 dollars
The lowest entry price on this page at 1.14 dollars. About 0.57 dollars per gigabyte at best value, validity 7 to 180 days. No unlimited option.
The 5G Question, Properly Answered
There are two halves to this, and conflating them is how most pages on the subject go wrong.
What Portugal has built
ANACOM, the national communications authority, reports that mobile accesses using 5G reached 6.0 million in the first quarter of 2026, and that 5G base stations now cover every municipality in the country. By any reasonable standard Portugal is a well developed 5G market, and if you are travelling with a 5G capable phone on a Portuguese network you will encounter it routinely in the cities and along the main corridors.
What stays unmeasured
Whether a specific travel plan connects over 5G is a different question, and our catalogue does not answer it. The technology field in our product data is inconsistent: where it declares 5G at all, it does so on duplicate records whose originals declare 4G for the same product. We are not going to resolve that contradiction by picking the flattering half. So we will tell you Portugal has extensive 5G, and we will not tell you that the plan you buy from us will use it. If 5G specifically is essential to your trip, nothing in this catalogue can promise it.
What Every Municipality Does and Does Not Mean
Coverage of all municipalities is a real achievement and a coarse unit of measurement, and both things are worth holding at once.
A municipality is a large thing
Portuguese municipalities vary enormously in size, and a municipality registering 5G presence does not mean 5G everywhere inside it. The statement tells you deployment is national rather than concentrated in Lisbon and Porto. It does not tell you about a specific village, and it is not the same as a percentage of territory or population covered.
And the places nobody measures
There is no published signal data for the Peneda Geres trails, the interior of the Alentejo away from the main roads, the levada walks on Madeira or the mountain routes on Sao Miguel. Those are the places connectivity actually becomes a question on a Portuguese trip. Download offline maps before walking, and do not treat a municipality level statement as an answer about a ridge.
Sizing for Cities, Coast and the Islands
Most Portugal trips are some mix of city days, coastal driving and possibly an island, and each behaves differently. Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Sintra and Albufeira come under one mainland plan. Madeira and the Azores do not: we sell them as separate destinations with their own plans, at esimcenter.com/madeira and esimcenter.com/azores. Nothing in the mainland product data says whether it reaches the islands, so if an island is the trip, buy its own plan rather than assume.
City days are light, driving days are not
Lisbon and Porto are dense, walkable and full of wifi, so city usage stays modest. Driving the Algarve or the Douro means navigation running continuously, which is the steadier draw. Size for the driving rather than the average.
Madeira and the Azores are sold separately
They are Portuguese territory, but our catalogue treats them as their own destinations, each with its own plans on its own page. Nothing in the mainland Portugal product data mentions either island, so we cannot tell you a mainland plan reaches them. If an island is the trip, buy the island plan.
Sort This Before You Fly
Three things decide whether the plan you bought is the plan you can use, and none of them can be fixed after you land.
Phone, profile, days
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked, which is the single most common reason a purchase turns out to be unusable. Install the profile at home while you still have a connection you trust: installation and activation are separate steps, so it does not start the validity period. Our installation guide walks through the iPhone and Android steps at esimcenter.com/setup. Then match the day count to the trip with a day of margin, because validity runs in calendar days from activation rather than days of use. If Madeira or the Azores is the destination, confirm the plan reaches it.
What Portugal Plans Exclude
These are data plans. Two consequences follow, and they cover most of what people ask afterwards.
Calls, messages and your own number
None of these plans include calls or texts over the mobile network, and none gives you a Portuguese number. Internet calling works normally and covers most practical needs. Keep your home SIM active if you want to stay reachable on your usual number, with its data roaming turned off.
Tethering, and what happens when it runs out
Tethering works and draws on the same allowance, so a laptop will move through a bundle much faster than a phone will. When the data is gone the connection simply stops, with no per megabyte charge afterwards. Buying a replacement needs a connection, which is the awkward part, so installing a second small plan before you travel is cheap insurance: an installed plan costs nothing until you activate it.
