The 2G Shutdown Is Finished, Not Planned
Vietnam did this faster and more completely than most countries, and it caught a lot of people out.

Vietnam set 16 September 2024 as the date 2G service ended. The decision came from the telecoms authority under the Ministry of Information and Communications, which was the responsible ministry at the time; it was merged into the Ministry of Science and Technology in early 2025. More than 10 million subscribers were still on 2G handsets at the time: Viettel counted 7.44 million, Vinaphone 1.3 million, MobiFone 1 million, and Vietnamobile and the virtual operators around half a million between them.
What it means for a visitor
There is no 2G layer left to fall back on. If your handset is old enough that 4G is not certain, that is worth checking before you buy any plan, ours included. A modern phone will not notice this at all.
Four Networks, and We Cannot Tell You Which
Vietnam has four mobile network operators plus virtual operators on top.
Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone and Vietnamobile
Knowing the names does not tell you what you will get. No supplier on this page publishes which network a plan roams onto, and it can change without notice. Anyone naming one specifically is guessing.
North to South Is One Purchase
The classic Vietnam trip runs the length of the country, and the pricing does not care.
No regional product
Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, Ha Long, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc are not priced apart, and no supplier here sells a regional Vietnamese plan. The same purchase covers the whole route.
What no dataset reaches
Sapa and Ha Giang are on the same purchase as Hanoi, at the same price, and there is no separate northern plan to buy. How the signal behaves up there is not something any supplier publishes, so there is no coverage section on this page. Download offline maps before the loop rather than during it.

Navigation, messaging and booking transport across two or three weeks fits inside a mid size bundle for most people.
Longer stays and remote work
If you are working from Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, compare the unlimited options against a large metered bundle before assuming the bigger number is better value.
