China Has eSIM Now. You Still Have to Walk Into a Store to Get a Chinese One.
China opened consumer eSIM to its own carriers in October 2025, and the activation route runs through a physical store counter, which is the one thing a traveller landing at Pudong or Baiyun cannot easily do on arrival day. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu all run on whichever country plan you pick on this page. We do not publish a city level eSIM for China, and no supplier here sells one. The phrase Shanghai eSIM has no product behind it in China; a country plan is what you buy, and it covers Beijing too.

China Carriers: Three Networks That Now Sell eSIM
The domestic market runs on China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. On 14 October 2025 all three launched eSIM phone service nationwide, reported by Xinhua the following day. That was the change: eSIM in China is no longer a thing that only foreign travel plans do.
What the network figures actually say
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology published its end of 2025 figures on 28 January 2026. It reported 4.838 million 5G base stations in service, 34.4 of them per 10,000 people, 1.204 billion 5G subscriptions and 1.827 billion mobile subscriptions in total. Those are national totals across all three carriers, not a per operator ranking, and the ministry did not publish one.
Which of the three your plan runs on
No card in this group names the local operator it roams onto, and the catalogue field that would answer it holds the same placeholder value for every product. A wrong answer on this point would be worse than no answer, so the network is not something the purchase settles.
What Sits Outside the 95 Per Cent
The same ministry statement gives the coverage shape: 5G reaches every town, and more than 95 percent of administrative villages. Read the second half of that sentence. Somewhere under 5 percent of administrative villages are outside it, and the ministry does not name which ones.
The statistic counts settlements, not the places you go to look at
An administrative village is a registered settlement. Coverage statistics are built on those. No institution in China publishes signal data for hiking routes, grassland and desert road crossings, high plateau passes, or the approach roads to scenic areas. A village level figure of 95 percent tells you nothing about a ridge four hours from the nearest village, and we are not going to convert one into the other.
Gigabit in every county is a different measurement
The ministry also reported gigabit optical network access in every county. That is fixed line broadband reaching the county seat, and it is measured separately from mobile coverage. It is a real figure and a good one, but it is not a statement about the signal on your phone, and the two get quoted interchangeably far too often.
Buy for the Trip, Not for the Month
Most people overbuy. The useful question is not how much data you use at home in a month, it is how much you use on the parts of a day when you are not on hotel or cafe wifi.
Short trips
For a week of maps, messaging, translation and the occasional upload, a small capped bundle usually clears it, and buying a second small bundle later costs less than guessing high on the first one. Video is what breaks the estimate, so if you plan to stream on trains, that is the moment to consider an unlimited plan instead of a bigger cap.
Longer stays
Past a month, the constraint changes from data to validity. Most China plans in our catalogue expire at 30 days regardless of how much data is left, so a long stay usually means either stacking plans or picking the Airalo cards, whose validity runs to 180 days. Work out the total across the whole stay before comparing headline prices.
Settle These Before You Fly
Three things decide whether the plan you bought is the plan you can use, and none of them can be fixed after you land.
Phone, profile, days
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked, which is the single most common reason a purchase turns out to be unusable. Install the profile at home while you still have a connection you trust: installation and activation are separate steps, so it does not start the validity period. Then match the day count to the trip with a day of margin, because validity runs in calendar days from activation rather than days of use. If your trip also takes in Hong Kong, note that a China plan does not cover it.
What a China Data Plan Leaves Out
These are data plans. Two consequences follow, and they cover most of what people ask afterwards.
Calls, messages and your own number
Calls and text messages over the mobile network are not included on any China plan we sell, and you do not get a Chinese number. Internet calling works normally, so in practice you call through whichever app the other person uses. Keep your home SIM active alongside the travel plan if you want to stay reachable on your usual number, and turn its data roaming off before you land.
Tethering, and what happens when it runs out
Tethering works and draws on the same allowance, so a laptop will move through a bundle much faster than a phone will. When the data is gone the connection simply stops, with no per megabyte charge afterwards. Buying a replacement needs a connection, which is the awkward part, so installing a second small plan before you travel is cheap insurance: an installed plan costs nothing until you activate it.
