China Mobile — the giant

Beijing and the Great Wall
Beijing — the Forbidden City, Tiananmen, the hutongs, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, 798 Art District — has blanket 5G, including the full subway network. Both airports (PEK Capital, PKX Daxing) are fully covered. The main Great Wall sections (Badaling, Mutianyu, Juyongguan) carry strong signal on the wall itself; remoter unrestored sections (Jiankou, Gubeikou) thin out — download maps for wild-wall hikes.
Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta

Chengdu, Guilin, and the scenic west
Chengdu (panda base, Sichuan food scene) has full 5G. Guilin and the Li River cruise to Yangshuo keep signal along the karst landscape; rural cycling paths around Yangshuo thin to 4G. Zhangjiajie's Avatar mountains and Jiuzhaigou's lakes are covered at visitor areas and thin on remote trails. Tibet and far-western routes involve special permits and patchier coverage — plan separately.
Payments and Apps — Navigating Daily Life in China
China is functionally cashless, and until recently that was a real barrier for visitors. It has become dramatically easier.
Alipay and WeChat Pay now take foreign cards
Since 2023, both Alipay and WeChat Pay let foreign visitors link international Visa and Mastercard credit cards in tourist mode — activate this before or on arrival (it needs data, another argument for landing connected). Once linked, you scan QR codes like a local: street food, taxis, museums, vending machines. Cash is legally accepted but increasingly awkward; foreign cards work directly only at hotels and upscale venues.
The apps that replace your apps

Arrival and activation

WhatsApp, FaceTime and calls home

Summer is hot and busy; winter is cold but atmospheric and cheap in the north.
Etiquette and practicalities
Carry your passport — it's required for train tickets, hotels, and many attractions. Attractions increasingly require advance booking via WeChat mini-programs or official sites (the Forbidden City sells out days ahead in season). Tipping is not practised. Tap water isn't drinkable; bottled water is everywhere and cheap.
