Liberia is not part of any regional roaming agreement — your home carrier will bill you per day without an eSIM.
Compatible phones
Most phones from 2018 onward support eSIM: iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, Galaxy S20 and newer. Check the model number of any phone bought in China, Hong Kong or Nigeria — some regional variants lack the eSIM chip.

Orange 4G covers Robertsport town and the main beach camps. The coastal drive from Monrovia has functional signal for most of its length; the last stretch into Lake Piso village thins.
Sapo National Park and the interior
Sapo (Liberia's largest rainforest park, home to pygmy hippos and forest elephants) sits deep in Sinoe County. Coverage is limited to the ranger station and the main road approach; game trails and river camps have essentially none. Book with a licensed tour operator via WhatsApp before leaving Monrovia and download offline Google Maps of the whole Sinoe region.
Gbarnga, Ganta and Nimba County
The Firestone rubber plantation south of Monrovia, Gbarnga in central Liberia, and Ganta near the Guinea border all sit along the main upcountry corridor. Orange coverage on this route is functional to good; Lonestar Cell MTN is a competitive alternative in Nimba County near the mining operations.

Liberia trips fall into three shapes — a Monrovia business or NGO stay, a coastal circuit with Robertsport surf and Providence Island history, or an upcountry loop toward Sapo National Park or Nimba County.
Monrovia business stay (4–7 days)
For meetings across Sinkor, the diplomatic quarter and downtown, 3–5 GB covers Yango, Google Maps and WhatsApp with local counterparts. A 15-day 3 GB plan runs around $6–10.
Coastal circuit (5–7 days)
Monrovia + Robertsport surf week + Providence Island and Waterside Market. 5 GB with 15-day validity fits — beach photo uploads, WhatsApp with the surf camp and Google Maps on the coastal drives.
Upcountry loop (7–10 days)
Monrovia → Firestone → Gbarnga → Ganta → Nimba County or a Sapo National Park visit via Zwedru. 10 GB with 30-day validity is comfortable — long overland stretches with Google Maps and WhatsApp with drivers and lodges throughout.
Activating at the Airport
The safest workflow is boring on purpose: buy the plan a day or two before your flight on reliable home Wi-Fi, scan the QR code, install the eSIM profile and label it 'Liberia'. Leave the profile installed but disabled until you land. On arrival at Roberts International (ROB) or James Spriggs Payne (MLW), enable the Liberia profile as your data line and turn on data roaming for it — this is required for travel eSIMs even though there's no roaming charge. Give it 30–90 seconds; your phone should register with Orange or Lonestar Cell MTN. If not, toggle airplane mode once. ROB Wi-Fi is workable but the 90-minute drive into Monrovia through the night is not the time to be negotiating a taxi rate without a live Yango price on your phone.
Coverage, Speed and the Liberian Networks
Orange Liberia leads on coverage and was first to commercial 5G — live in Monrovia since 2023 and expanding along the coast. Lonestar Cell MTN has strong Monrovia coverage and holds up in Nimba County and along the main upcountry highways. Both operators run 4G LTE nationwide with typical speeds of 15–40 Mbps in the capital; Orange 5G in central Monrovia hits 200+ Mbps. The regulator is the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA).
The wet-season network reality
Liberia has two seasons — a long wet season (May to October) that turns the interior laterite roads slow, and a dry season (November to April) that opens everything up. Coverage doesn't change with the seasons but travel does. In the wet season, upcountry drives take much longer, phones are often the only communication with lodges and drivers, and having reliable data becomes proportionally more important.
Border crossings
Liberia's land borders — with Guinea at Ganta, with Sierra Leone at Bo Waterside, and with Côte d'Ivoire at Loguatuo — all switch your phone to the neighbouring country's networks. Your Liberia eSIM stops at each border; plan a separate profile for onward travel.
Common Mistakes Travellers Make
Four patterns come up repeatedly. First: arriving at ROB after midnight without Yango pre-installed and pre-authenticated — the 90-minute drive to Monrovia is not the time to negotiate a taxi rate blind. Second: not enabling data roaming on the eSIM profile — travel eSIMs are technically roaming on the local network, so the setting must be on even though there's no roaming charge. Third: heading upcountry toward Sapo National Park or Nimba County without offline Google Maps and a satellite-message backup — signal drops for stretches and there's little to fall back on. Fourth: crossing into Guinea or Côte d'Ivoire without a plan for the next country — the Liberia eSIM stops at the border.
