Tunisia eSIM: Carthage, El Jem, and the Star Wars Desert

Not in EU Roaming — But Some French Plans Include It
The direct version: Tunisia is not in the EU, the EEA, or any European roaming zone. Most foreign home carriers treat Tunisia as chargeable international roaming — Turkish carriers $10-15 per day plus MB fees, UK post-Brexit £5-8 per day, US Verizon and AT&T $10-15 per day, German and other EU carriers €8-12 per day. Italian carriers, given the geographic proximity across the Strait of Sicily, sometimes have inclusive Tunisia roaming worth checking. French carriers are the specific case: France has one of the largest Tunisian diaspora populations in the world and Free Mobile, Orange, SFR and Bouygues have all offered Tunisia-inclusive plans at various times specifically to serve that market. Orange Tunisia (launched 2010) is the third player, part of the Orange Group, with growing coverage and competitive prices. 5G rollout has been limited — a few pilot zones in Tunis and Sousse on Tunisie Telecom and Ooredoo, but almost all travel data runs on 4G LTE at 20-60 Mbps, which is plenty for maps, WhatsApp, video calls and photo uploads. Tunis, Carthage, and Sidi Bou Said

El Jem, Kairouan, and the Roman Heritage Loop
Tunisia's inland heritage sites are exceptional and often uncrowded relative to European counterparts. El Jem, halfway between Sousse and Sfax, holds the world's third-largest surviving Roman amphitheatre — a 35,000-seat colosseum better preserved than most Roman ruins in Italy, standing in a small provincial town. Not a problem for the drive itself; do not go off-road, and download offline maps for the approach.

French is the practical second language for anything beyond tourist basics; Turkish plus some French phrases works well.
