Porto Rico eSIM

Internet in Puerto Rico is carried by three local networks, Claro, Liberty and T-Mobile, and a travel eSIM attaches to one of them as a visiting phone. Few suppliers name their partner network, and the plan card is the only place one might appear. From the forts of Old San Juan to the hotel strips of Condado and Isla Verde, the San Juan metro area is the most built up part of the island, with the most consistent connections. El Yunque is different, since its roads climb into thick rainforest canopy, and we do not promise signal on the deeper trails. Keep offline maps ready for the coffee towns of the Cordillera Central too. Vieques and Culebra, reached by ferry or small plane from the east coast, belong to the same plan, though quiet beaches away from town are not guaranteed. Visitors on a non-US home line pay their own carrier for data roaming in Puerto Rico, so switch it off there before the plane taxis in. Calls and texts to your regular number still arrive, since cell phone service in Puerto Rico on that line runs under your provider's roaming pricing. Planning a hop to the US Virgin Islands? Check whether the card lists them, because a plan bought for Puerto Rico may stop at its own shoreline.

Dial star hash 06 hash before you buy an eSIM for Puerto Rico and look for an EID among the numbers, because a phone without one cannot take the plan. A handset still locked to its original carrier will also block the install, which is common with phones bought on contract. Scanning the QR code at home before the flight to San Juan means the line is ready when the cabin doors open. Installing a week early is harmless, because the clock on most plans waits for the first connection on Puerto Rican soil, a rule each card confirms. Once you land, turn the Puerto Rico line on, enable data roaming for it and make it your mobile data line. Cruise passengers can make the same switch as the ship ties up near Old San Juan. The eSIM card for Puerto Rico stays bound to the handset you scanned it with, so it cannot pass to a companion's phone. A Puerto Rico SIM card from a local store is the way to get a local number for a longer rental or job. Picking up a Puerto Rico prepaid SIM card means a trip to a phone store, time a beach itinerary would rather spend elsewhere. For a visitor who only needs data, an eSIM in Puerto Rico is quicker, running before you reach the taxi line in Carolina.
