eSIM US Virgin Islands Plans and Prices
A US Virgin Islands eSIM gives your phone data from the moment you land on St Thomas or St Croix, with no local SIM to buy and no roaming bill from your home carrier. Before anything else, though, visitors from the mainland should check their own plan, because two of the largest US carriers describe the territory as part of their domestic footprint in their own published terms. For travelers on other plans, the eSIM installs before the flight and your usual number stays in the phone for calls and texts. Charlotte Amalie, Christiansted, Frederiksted and Cruz Bay all draw from one list, since no plan here is scoped to a single island. A search for eSIM Charlotte Amalie therefore lands on the same products as one for St John.
Buy an eSIM for the US Virgin Islands
Before you buy an eSIM for the US Virgin Islands, read your own carrier's terms, because a plan is only worth buying if your home line would otherwise charge you roaming. Those carrier statements describe their own tariffs, not a rule for every operator, so a prepaid brand or older plan needs checking. If you do need one, confirm the phone supports eSIM and has no carrier lock by dialing star hash 06 hash and looking for an EID below the IMEI. Checkout issues a QR code, and it installs over home wifi in a couple of minutes, well before the flight to St Thomas. Most plans start counting days on their first connection in the territory, and each product page states its own rule. On arrival, switch the travel line on and enable data roaming for it. An eSIM card for the US Virgin Islands stays with the handset it was installed on, so it cannot be moved to a borrowed phone. A US Virgin Islands SIM card from a local operator is the way to get a local number, useful for a long stay or a rental. That US Virgin Islands prepaid SIM card is bought in person and is not part of this page. An e-SIM for the US Virgin Islands covers St Thomas, St Croix and St John alike, so the ferry between them changes nothing on your bill.
Internet in the US Virgin Islands With an eSIM
Internet in the US Virgin Islands comes from three retail networks, Liberty, Viya and T-Mobile, alongside viNGN, the government infrastructure company, according to testimony heard by the territorial legislature. Neither brand on this page states which network its plans use, so you cannot pick one in advance. No operator or regulator has published a 5G coverage percentage for the territory, so this page quotes none. A large federal broadband program covers the territory, but it funds fixed lines rather than mobile networks, so it says little about a phone signal. Data roaming in the US Virgin Islands must be on for the travel line and off for your home line if your carrier treats the territory as international. Cell phone service in the US Virgin Islands on your usual number keeps working for calls and texts, under whatever terms your carrier applies there. The British Virgin Islands are a separate market, so a plan for the US territory does not cover a day trip there unless it lists them. No wider Caribbean plan is offered for the territory here, so a trip combining it with another island needs a separate purchase. Offline maps are worth downloading before a hike on St John, whichever connection you use.
Best eSIM for the US Virgin Islands
The best eSIM for the US Virgin Islands depends on whether you need one at all, and then on how long you are staying. Only two brands cover the territory here, Roamify and Airalo, and both sell plans that run up to a month. Roamify starts at a single day and reaches 20 GB on its capped plans, which suits a cruise stop in Charlotte Amalie as well as a longer stay. Airalo starts at seven days and tops out at 10 GB capped, a better match for a week of beaches than for a day ashore. Both brands also sell a US Virgin Islands eSIM unlimited data plan, so streaming on a villa balcony on St John does not require a calculation. Neither reaches beyond thirty days, so an eSIM in the US Virgin Islands for a season on St Croix means buying again. A US Virgin Islands travel eSIM for a day in port only needs the shortest Roamify plan. For a week split between Christiansted and Frederiksted, a mid-size capped plan covers maps, messages and photo uploads for most people. If a capped plan runs low, a second one can be bought from this page and installed while you still have data.
