Is There a Tokyo eSIM, or Just a Japan eSIM?

Most people who reach this page are asking what a Japan eSIM costs rather than whether they need one, so this page leads with prices by trip length and puts the reassurance afterwards. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima are not separate products, and neither are Nara, Fukuoka or Sapporo, so if you searched for a Tokyo eSIM or an Osaka eSIM, the plans on this page are the ones that apply. Tokyo eSIM and Osaka eSIM are search terms, not products. The product is a Japan plan, and it costs the same for either.

Compare Every Plan for Japan

Thirty seven plans for Japan. That is the number the plan list above shows, and it counts both Japan only plans and wider regional plans that include Japan, because you can buy either from this page. Figures come from the live plan list and change when suppliers reprice.

Roamify: the lowest entry price, 3.12 dollars

The lowest entry price on this page at 3.12 dollars. About 0.76 dollars per gigabyte at best value, validity 1 to 15 days. Unlimited options available.

Airalo: the widest unlimited choice

More unlimited plans than anything else on this page. Entry from 6.50 dollars, about 0.89 dollars per gigabyte at best value, validity 7 to 180 days.

Esimaccess: the cheapest data, at 0.49 dollars per gigabyte

About 0.49 dollars per gigabyte at best value, the lowest rate on this page. Entry from 1.40 dollars, validity 7 to 180 days. No unlimited option.

Telcovision: the outlier, from 51.99 dollars

Entry here starts at 51.99 dollars, more than ten times the cheapest entry on this page at 1.40.

What Each Trip Length Actually Costs

Japan plans come in eight lengths: 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 30 and 180 days. Because the question people ask most often is what a specific trip length costs rather than what a gigabyte costs, here are the concrete answers.

Ten days, which is the most common Japan trip

Every ten day plan in our Japan catalogue is unlimited. There are five of them, and they run from 18.72 dollars at the cheapest to 54.01 dollars at the dearest, with the middle of the range around 24 to 29 dollars. There is no capped ten day option, so if you were planning to buy a modest ten day bundle, the choice is actually between unlimited plans at different prices, or a seven or fifteen day capped plan instead.

One and two weeks, capped

If you would rather buy a fixed allowance, the seven day options include 5 GB at 5.51 dollars, 10 GB at 9.90 dollars and 20 GB at 15.27 dollars. At fifteen days, 10 GB is 11.55 dollars and 20 GB is 17.21 dollars. Those are the cheapest at each size rather than the only ones. Compare the fifteen day 20 GB plan against the ten day unlimited before deciding, because they are close in price and very different in what they give you.

98.4 Per Cent Nationally, and 88.4 Somewhere

Japan publishes some of the clearest coverage data of any country we sell, and it is worth quoting in full rather than reducing to the flattering half.

The national figure and the spread behind it

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications published 5G development status for the end of the 2024 financial year on 19 September 2025. It gives a nationwide 5G population coverage rate of 98.4 percent, and, in the same release, a range by prefecture of 88.4 percent to 99.9 percent. The figures are compiled from reports by four carriers: NTT Docomo, KDDI with Okinawa Cellular, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. The national number is excellent. The eleven and a half point spread underneath it is the part worth carrying with you.

Population coverage, once again, is not terrain

Even 99.9 percent is a population measure. Japan is mountainous and heavily forested away from the coastal corridors, and no institution publishes signal data for hiking routes in the Japanese Alps, the trails around Yakushima, or the interior of Hokkaido. Cities, the shinkansen corridors and the towns are comprehensively covered. Ridges are a different question and not one anybody answers.

Sizing for Trains, Cities and the Parts in Between

A Japan trip usually means dense cities, long train journeys and heavy navigation use, which is a combination that consumes more than people expect.

Navigation in Japanese cities is constant

Working out which of several exits from a Tokyo or Osaka station you need, and which of several train lines gets you there, means maps and transit apps run more or less continuously while you are moving. That is the single largest ordinary draw on a Japan trip, ahead of anything social.

Which is why unlimited is popular here

Given that pattern, and that the cheapest ten day unlimited plan is under nineteen dollars, unlimited is a more reasonable default in Japan than in most destinations. If you know you are a light user, the capped plans are markedly cheaper. If you do not know, unlimited removes the arithmetic.

Before Narita

Three things decide whether the plan you bought is the plan you can use, and none of them can be fixed after you land.

Phone, profile, days

Your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked, which is the single most common reason a purchase turns out to be unusable. Install the profile at home while you still have a connection you trust: installation and activation are separate steps, so it does not start the validity period. Our installation guide walks through the iPhone and Android steps at esimcenter.com/setup. Then match the day count to the trip with a day of margin, because validity runs in calendar days from activation rather than days of use. A ten day trip including arrival and departure days is often eleven calendar days of needing data.

What Japan Plans Leave Out

These are data plans. Two consequences follow, and they cover most of what people ask afterwards.

Calls, messages and your own number

Calls and messages over the mobile network are not included on any Japan plan we sell, and none provides a Japanese number. Internet calling works normally, and this is rarely a constraint in Japan, where restaurant and accommodation bookings increasingly run through apps rather than phone calls. Keep your home SIM active for your own number, data roaming off.

Tethering, and what happens when it runs out

Tethering works and draws on the same allowance, so a laptop will move through a bundle much faster than a phone will. When the data is gone the connection simply stops, with no per megabyte charge afterwards. Buying a replacement needs a connection, which is the awkward part, so installing a second small plan before you travel is cheap insurance: an installed plan costs nothing until you activate it.
