Three Networks, and Their 5G Is Not Equal
Germany's regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur, publishes network coverage and it separates the operators. Its figures describe the position in October 2025 and were published in December 2025. Around 95 per cent of Germany's land area is covered by 5G, and around 98 per cent by 4G or 5G together. The per operator split is the interesting part
That 95 per cent is the combined figure. Individually the regulator put Deutsche Telekom at around 87 per cent of the land area, Telefonica at around 76 per cent and Vodafone at around 75 per cent. A twelve point spread between the best and the rest is large enough to matter if you are travelling outside cities.
Which of the three a card uses is not stated
No card on this page names the German operator it attaches to. So the networks differ by twelve points and which of them you land on is not part of the purchase. That is a gap in what is published, and it is shown here rather than papered over.
Note the denominator
These are figures for land area, not population. Area is the harder measure and the one that matters if you are driving through Brandenburg or the Bavarian Forest rather than staying in Berlin. Coverage of people would be higher.
Unlimited Data in Berlin, and What It Actually Buys
The most searched question we see about Germany is specifically about unlimited data for a Berlin trip. It is worth being precise about what unlimited means here.
Forty three of our German plans are unlimited
Twenty four of them come from the Airalo cards and the rest are spread across the list. That is an unusually high proportion, so you have real choice rather than one token option.
Read the fair use threshold
Most unlimited plans slow down after a daily allowance rather than cutting off. Where the supplier publishes that threshold it appears in the plan detail. If you are streaming or tethering daily, the threshold matters more than the word unlimited.
For a city break you probably do not need it
A long weekend in Berlin on maps, messaging and photographs rarely passes 2 GB. Unlimited earns its price on longer trips, heavy tethering, or if you genuinely do not want to think about it.
Germany and Austria on One Plan
People search for this pairing often enough that it deserves a straight answer, and the answer is that a Germany plan does not cover Austria.
What to buy instead
Look at a Europe regional plan, which covers both and usually more. Check the country list on the product before buying rather than assuming, because regional plans differ on which countries they include and the differences are not always where you would expect.
If you live in the EU you may need nothing
If your phone plan comes from another EU or EEA country, roaming in both Germany and Austria is normally included in your domestic allowance at no extra charge. Check your own plan before you buy anything from us.
How Much Data a Week of Maps and Transit Apps Uses
Germany is cheap for data, so the risk is overbuying. The figures below are our estimate from typical usage patterns, not a measurement.
A week of ordinary use
Maps, messaging, transport apps and photographs come to roughly 3 to 5 GB over a week for most people. At the best rate on this page that is a little over two dollars of data.
Trains and transport apps
The DB Navigator app and city transport apps are light on data but you will open them constantly. Budget for the habit rather than the bytes.
Turn off automatic backup before you fly
Automatic photo backup and app updates over mobile data will empty a small plan in days. This one setting saves more than choosing a different supplier.

Check the handset first
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. Dial star hash 06 hash. If an EID appears alongside the IMEI, the phone supports eSIM.
Install before you fly
Install the profile while you still have working internet at home. Most plans begin counting when the eSIM first attaches to a network in Germany rather than when you install it, but the plan detail on each product says which.
Your own number keeps working
The eSIM adds a data line. Your usual SIM stays in the phone and keeps receiving calls and texts on your normal number. Leave data roaming off on your home line.
