A SIM built into the phone instead of slotted into it. What changes, what does not, and what it means when you travel.
An eSIM does the same job a plastic SIM card does: it proves to a mobile network that your phone is allowed to use it. The difference is where it lives. Instead of a card you push into a tray, the chip is soldered into the phone during manufacture, and what you install is a profile written onto that chip. Nothing arrives in the post, nothing goes in the tray, and the phone can hold several profiles at once.
You receive a QR code or an activation code. The phone reads it, contacts the server named in that code, and downloads a profile: a small encrypted package holding the credentials that identify you to a network. The profile is written to the embedded chip and appears in your settings as a line you can switch on and off. The whole process takes a couple of minutes over wifi, and once it is done the phone connects to towers exactly as it would with a plastic card.
eSIM is an industry standard, not one company's feature. That is why a profile from a network in one country installs on a phone bought in another, and why the same phone can hold profiles from unrelated networks side by side.
Every embedded chip has an EID, the number that identifies it. You will find it in Settings under About, and its presence is how you tell whether a phone has eSIM hardware at all.
That depends entirely on the plan, not on the technology. A plan from your home network is a full line with a number, so calls and texts arrive on it. Most travel data plans are data only: they carry internet and nothing else, with no number attached. That is not a limitation so much as a design choice, because your existing number stays active on your home line at the same time, and calls and messages keep arriving there while the travel plan handles data.
Messaging and calling apps run over data, so a data only plan carries your conversations perfectly well. What it does not carry is a text message sent to a new local number, which is exactly the thing travellers rarely need.
This is the most asked question about eSIM by a wide margin, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a shrug. There are four real tradeoffs. Moving to a new phone takes a step rather than a swap. A phone that will not switch on cannot have its SIM pulled out and put in another handset. Some networks release the physical tray from a carrier lock before they release the eSIM slot. And installing needs a connection, so it has to be done before you are somewhere without one.
For a travel data plan on a working, unlocked phone, none of the four come up. They are real, and they are the reasons someone might prefer a plastic card, but they describe edge cases rather than everyday use. The one worth planning around is the last: install before you fly, not after you land.
Battery drain is one: an eSIM is the same kind of chip doing the same work, and what costs battery is running two lines at once, which is equally true of two plastic cards. Slower speeds is the other: an eSIM connects to the same towers on the same network as the equivalent card, so the speed is set by the plan and the network, never by the form the SIM takes.
Beyond the four tradeoffs there is a fair complaint about visibility. A plastic card is a thing you can see and hold, and an eSIM is not, so the first install feels less certain than it turns out to be. There is also less control over moving a line between handsets, which sits with the network rather than with you.
On the whole it is at least as safe as a plastic card and better in one specific way: it cannot be physically removed from your phone. A stolen handset cannot have its SIM pulled out and dropped into another phone to receive your codes, which is a real theft pattern with plastic cards. The profile itself is encrypted and tied to that one chip, so copying it to another device is not something a thief can do.
Banking apps do not know or care which kind of SIM is in the phone. They see an internet connection. An app that works over a plastic SIM works identically over an eSIM, including over a travel data plan abroad.
SIM swap fraud is an attack on your account with your network, where someone persuades the network to move your number to a handset they control. That works against plastic SIMs and eSIMs alike, because the weak point is the network's identity checks, not the card. The defences are the same either way: a PIN or passcode on your network account, and app based two factor codes rather than text messages where your bank offers them.
If your bank sends codes by text, those go to the number on your home line. Keep that line switched on, with data roaming off so it does not carry data at roaming rates, and the codes will still arrive while the travel eSIM does the data.
The eSIM itself is not a product with a price. What you pay for is the plan written onto it, and that works like any other mobile plan. A line from your home network costs what that contract costs, monthly. A travel plan is normally a one off payment for a set amount of data over a set number of days, and when it ends it simply stops rather than renewing. There is no separate charge for the eSIM being an eSIM.
Some plans include a small free trial so you can confirm a phone works before committing. That is a trial of a plan, not a permanently free connection. Any offer of unlimited free mobile data is worth reading closely.
You can buy and install a plan yourself, from anywhere, without visiting a shop or speaking to anyone. Delivery is immediate: the code is issued at the moment of purchase and the install takes minutes. That is the practical difference travellers notice most, because the alternative is finding a shop after landing, queueing, and sometimes registering a passport before the connection works at all.
Does the phone have eSIM hardware, which the EID under About answers. And is it free of a carrier lock, since a locked handset accepts the install and then fails to activate. Both checks take a minute, and both are worth doing before buying anything.
The install needs a connection, and airport wifi is an unreliable place to depend on one. Buy and install before you leave, then switch the plan on when you land.
