What each one does better, and which suits a trip abroad.
Both an eSIM and a physical SIM do the same job: they identify your phone to a mobile network so it can carry your calls and data. The network, the towers and the speeds are identical. What differs is how the identity gets onto the phone, and that one difference changes several things that matter when you are travelling.
A physical SIM is a chip on a plastic card that you slide into a tray. An eSIM is a chip already soldered into the phone, and what you install is a profile written onto it. Nothing arrives in the post and nothing goes into the tray. That single change is where every other difference comes from.
An eSIM connects to the same towers on the same network as the equivalent plastic card. If a network gives you 5G in a city, it gives you 5G through either form. Any speed difference you notice abroad comes from which network the plan uses, never from the form the SIM takes.
You can buy and install one from anywhere, including the departure lounge or the night before you fly. There is no shop to find on arrival, no queue, no passport registration at a kiosk, and no tray tool. The phone keeps your home number active at the same time, so messages and calls to your usual number still arrive while the travel plan carries your data.
A plastic card is a small object that has to survive the trip, and the home SIM you took out has to survive it too. Travellers lose one often enough that the tray tool and a paper envelope are a familiar part of packing. An eSIM removes that whole category of problem.
Current handsets store multiple eSIM profiles and keep two active at once. That means a plan for this trip and a plan for the next one can both live on the phone, with the one you are not using switched off rather than thrown away.
Moving a plastic card to a spare handset takes ten seconds and no account, no network and no code. An eSIM moves between phones through a transfer step that needs either the network or a fresh installation. If your habit is to hand a working SIM to a travel companion whose phone has died, the plastic card does that and an eSIM does not.
This is the plain limit. A phone without eSIM hardware cannot take an eSIM at all, and there is no software route around it. Most handsets sold before 2018, and some current budget ranges, are in that group.
Installing an eSIM profile requires a connection at the moment of installation, usually wifi. A plastic card needs nothing. In practice this means installing the travel eSIM before you fly rather than after you land.
Current iPhones hold two eSIM profiles active at the same time and store eight or more, switching between them in settings. Current Samsung and Pixel handsets behave similarly, with the exact number depending on the model. For a traveller the useful arrangement is your home line active for calls and messages, and the travel plan active for data, both on at once.
Each profile carries its own number and its own plan. Running two means running two plans. What it does not mean is duplicating one number across profiles, which no network supports.
The recurring complaints are worth naming plainly. Moving to a new phone takes a step. A phone that will not switch on cannot have its SIM pulled out and put in another handset. Some networks release the physical tray from a carrier lock before they release the eSIM slot. And a few countries still require a physical registration for local numbers. None of these apply to a travel data plan on a working, unlocked handset, which is the case most travellers are actually in.
This comes up often. An eSIM draws no more power than a plastic SIM; it is the same kind of chip doing the same work. What does use more battery is running two lines at once, and that is true whether the second line is an eSIM or a card in the tray.
Switching to an eSIM does not close the tray. On a handset that has both, you can keep using a physical SIM afterwards, and on most models you can hold a physical SIM and an eSIM together.
For a trip of a few days to a few weeks, on an unlocked handset with eSIM hardware, the eSIM is the more practical of the two. It is installed before departure, it keeps the home number reachable, it needs no shop on arrival, and it leaves nothing to lose. A physical local SIM still makes sense for a long stay where you want a local number people can call, or on a handset with no eSIM chip.
Is the handset unlocked, and does it have eSIM hardware. Both take a minute in Settings. If either answer is no, a local physical SIM is the route for that phone on that trip.

For a short trip abroad on a phone that supports it, the eSIM is more practical: it installs before you fly and keeps your home number active. For handing a working SIM to another handset, or for a phone with no eSIM chip, the plastic card is the one that works.
