What Apple Publishes About iPhone eSIM

Apple's own support page gives three facts that decide most questions on this page. The cutoff is iPhone XS, XS Max and XR or later. Two eSIMs can be active at the same time on supported models. A supported iPhone can store eight or more eSIM profiles and you swap which ones are active in Settings.

iPhone 8 and earlier are outside the line

Apple's technical specification for iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus lists nano-SIM only and makes no mention of eSIM. Nothing on those handsets can be enabled to change that, because the hardware component is absent rather than switched off.

Eight profiles stored, two active

The distinction matters on a trip with several countries. You can keep a card for each destination installed and switch the active pair as you cross borders, without deleting anything or reinstalling a QR code you may no longer have.

China mainland is a separate case

Apple states that in China mainland only iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. Handsets sold in Hong Kong and Macao are listed as Dual SIM with two nano-SIM cards instead. If your phone was bought in one of those markets, its behaviour is not the same as a model sold elsewhere.

Android Has No Single Cutoff Line

There is no Android equivalent of Apple's one sentence. Support is decided by the manufacturer for each model, and the same model name can ship with eSIM in one country and without it in another. That is why a list of Android model names goes out of date faster than it can be maintained, and why the check on your own handset is the reliable answer.

Do all Android phones support eSIM?

No. Support is common on flagship models from the last few years and much thinner further down the range. Budget and older mid-range handsets frequently ship without the component, even from makers whose flagships have carried it for years.

The regional variant problem

A model sold in one market may carry eSIM while the same name sold elsewhere does not. Checking the settings on the handset itself sidesteps this entirely, because it reports what that specific device has rather than what the model is supposed to have.

Locked and Unlocked Handsets

A carrier lock stops an eSIM from a different network attaching, and that is separate from whether the phone supports eSIM at all. A locked phone can be fully eSIM capable and still refuse a travel profile. The two checks are different and both have to pass before a travel plan will work.

Can I get an eSIM on an unlocked phone?

Yes, and an unlocked handset is the straightforward case. If the phone supports eSIM and carries no carrier lock, a travel profile installs and attaches to a local network on arrival with nothing else required.

What to do about a locked handset

Only the carrier that locked it can unlock it, and most will do so once the contract or device payment is complete. No plan sold by anyone works around a carrier lock, and any offer that claims otherwise is worth reading closely.
