Bulgaria eSIM
Bulgaria gives you Europe at a fraction of Western European prices - Sofia coffee culture, Plovdivs Roman amphitheater, Veliko Tarnovos medieval ramparts, the Rila Monastery and a Black Sea coast running from Varna down to Sozopol and Burgas. A prepaid Bulgaria eSIM gets your phone online the moment you land at Sofia Airport, or cross the bus border from Greece, Romania or Serbia. Booking your guesthouse, coordinating a Rila day trip driver or just translating a Cyrillic menu all become simple. This page compares every active Bulgaria eSIM plan and the QR code arrives by email within minutes of purchase. No SIM kiosk hunt, no surprise charges, no waiting in line at an A1 store.
Why a Bulgaria eSIM Makes Sense
Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 and is part of the EU Roam Like At Home zone, but that only helps you if your home SIM is from another EU country. Travelers from the US, UK, Turkey or other non-EU countries face the usual roaming surcharges. A local A1 or Vivacom SIM means a trip to a shop with your passport, which kills a couple of hours of a short city break. An eSIM bypasses all of that - install at home, fly in, you have data immediately at Bulgarian rates.
Coverage in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas
The four biggest cities have excellent 4G LTE and increasingly 5G on A1, Vivacom and Yettel. Sofia airport, the central yellow-brick downtown, Vitosha Boulevard, Plovdivs Kapana arts district, Varnas sea garden and Burgas city center all get strong signal. Speeds easily handle video calls, music streaming and Instagram uploads.
Mountains and Black Sea coast
The Rila and Pirin mountains have coverage along main roads and at most ski resorts (Bansko, Borovets). Trekking trails above 2500m can lose signal. The Black Sea coastal road from Varna south through Nessebar, Sunny Beach and Sozopol has full coverage. Smaller mountain villages may have only one carrier with usable signal.
Bulgarian Carriers: A1, Vivacom, Yettel
Bulgaria has three main mobile operators. A1 Bulgaria (formerly Mobiltel) is the largest with the broadest national LTE. Vivacom is the legacy state telco with strong national reach and fast 5G in cities. Yettel (formerly Telenor Bulgaria) rounds out the three with good urban coverage. Your eSIM hops between them based on signal automatically.
A1 and Vivacom
The two strongest carriers with the deepest national coverage. Reliable LTE on highways between Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas. 5G is rolling out in Sofia and the major cities.
Yettel
Excellent urban LTE, especially fast in Sofia and Plovdiv. Coverage in smaller towns is good. The eSIM uses Yettel when A1 or Vivacom signal is weaker.
How Much Data You Need
Bulgaria trips are typically 5-10 days, often combining Sofia with a Plovdiv day trip and either a Black Sea or Rila Monastery excursion. WhatsApp coordination with guesthouses, Google Maps in the cobblestoned old towns, Google Translate for Cyrillic menus and the occasional photo upload cover most use. 5 GB is comfortable for most trips.
City break (3-5 days)
3 GB plans are usually enough for a Sofia and Plovdiv combo. Cloud photo backup is the wild card - if you shoot heavily at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral or Kapana, push to 5 GB.
Beach week or ski trip (7 days)
5-10 GB covers a Sunny Beach or Bansko week. Resort Wi-Fi is usually decent but the eSIM keeps you online at restaurants, beach bars and lift queues.
Longer Balkan loop
10 GB or unlimited if Bulgaria is part of a longer trip combining Romania, Serbia or Greece. Each country needs its own eSIM since EU roaming only applies to EU SIMs.
Installing and Activating
Purchase here, QR code emails in 1-2 minutes, scan into your phone at home before flying. The eSIM stays dormant until your phone connects to a Bulgarian network. Sofia Airport, the road from Greece, the bus terminal in Sofia - any of these triggers activation.
iPhone install
Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. Scan or open the email and tap. Label the new plan Bulgaria. Plan stays dormant until you cross the border.
Android install
Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Download a SIM Instead. Pixel and Samsung Galaxy work cleanly.
Border crossing from Greece or Romania
If you bus from Thessaloniki to Sofia or from Bucharest to Ruse, your phone hands off from Greek or Romanian carriers to Bulgarian carriers as you cross. The eSIM activates and replaces the home roaming.
Apps That Matter in Bulgaria
WhatsApp dominates communication with guesthouses, tour operators and even some restaurants. Google Maps handles navigation including the Sofia metro and tram system. TaxiMe and Yellow Taxi apps are the local ride-hail standards - both need a working SIM with SMS or WhatsApp verification.
WhatsApp and Viber
Most Bulgarian guesthouses use WhatsApp or Viber for booking confirmations. Viber is more popular among older generations in the region. Have both ready.
TaxiMe and Yellow Taxi
Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna have ride-hail apps that work like Uber. Uber itself does not operate in Bulgaria. TaxiMe is the most reliable for tourists.
Google Translate offline
Pre-download Bulgarian. Useful for menus in smaller restaurants and Cyrillic road signs outside major cities. Translation is generally good for menu basics.
Before You Buy
Bulgaria uses the Lev (BGN) pegged to the Euro at roughly 1.96 BGN per EUR. Cards are accepted in cities, cash useful in villages. Practical eSIM notes below.
eSIM-compatible phone
iPhone XS or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer (most variants). Older phones can buy an A1 or Vivacom physical SIM at Sofia Airport but bring passport ID for the registration.
Bulgaria in Schengen
Bulgaria joined Schengen for air travel in 2024 and land borders followed. Crossings from other Schengen countries are now smoother. Roaming rules separate from physical border procedures - the eSIM keeps things simple.
