Greenland eSIM
Greenland is the worlds largest island and an autonomous territory of Denmark - a vast Arctic landscape of ice sheets, fjords, icebergs and tiny colorful settlements scattered along an ice-free coastal strip. Visitors come for the capital Nuuk with its modern Inuit-Scandinavian culture, the iconic Ilulissat Icefjord (a UNESCO site with ice calving from the worlds most active non-Antarctic glacier), the dog sled town of Sisimiut, the southern Norse ruins at Qassiarsuk and Igaliku, the East Greenland settlements at Tasiilaq and Kulusuk, and the Northern Lights season from September through April. A prepaid Greenland eSIM connects your phone to TELE-POST the moment you land at Nuuk (GOH), Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) or Ilulissat (JAV). Coordinating your dog sled excursion, checking the ice charter flight schedule or chatting with a Disko Bay tour operator stays simple. This page compares every active Greenland eSIM plan and the QR code arrives by email within minutes of purchase. No SIM kiosk wait in tiny Greenlandic settlements, no roaming surprise from your home carrier.
Why a Greenland eSIM Saves Hassle
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark but NOT in the EU - so EU Roam Like At Home does not apply. UK post-Brexit travelers also face premium rates. Greenland uses Danish Krone (DKK) but is entirely outside EU roaming. A local TELE-POST SIM means a stop at the post office in Nuuk or Kangerlussuaq with passport ID - and TELE-POST is essentially the only carrier so options are limited. An eSIM bypasses that - install at home, fly in, you have Greenlandic LTE rates from the moment you land. Especially valuable since flights between Greenlandic settlements happen by small Air Greenland Dash-8 or helicopter where SIM shops at intermediate stops do not exist.
Coverage in Nuuk, Ilulissat, Sisimiut
Nuuk (the capital), Ilulissat, Sisimiut, Qaqortoq and the main coastal settlements all have 4G LTE on TELE-POST. The Nuuk Old Colonial Harbour, Ilulissat Icefjord visitor center area, Sisimiut dog sled town and Qaqortoq market square all get reliable signal. Speeds easily handle WhatsApp, Maps and uploading iceberg photos.
Ice sheet and remote settlements
Once you leave the populated coastal strip, the vast interior ice sheet has no signal at all. Boat trips into the Disko Bay icebergs keep signal close to Ilulissat. Helicopter rides between East Greenland settlements (Tasiilaq, Kulusuk) have signal at the airports but nothing in between. Plan offline maps and trust your guide for everything beyond the towns.
Greenlandic Carrier: TELE-POST
Greenland has essentially one mobile operator. TELE-POST (formerly TELE Greenland) operates the only national network covering the populated west and east coast settlements. There is no competing carrier. The infrastructure is impressive given the geographic challenges - LTE in tiny remote settlements only reachable by boat or helicopter.
TELE-POST coverage map
Covers all major coastal settlements: Nuuk, Ilulissat, Sisimiut, Qaqortoq, Aasiaat, Maniitsoq, Tasiilaq, Kulusuk, Kangerlussuaq, Narsarsuaq, Upernavik and beyond. Each settlement has town-center LTE. Speeds vary - smaller settlements can be 4G but not as fast as Nuuk.
No coverage on the ice sheet
The interior is empty. The Northern Lights viewing spots near towns have coverage but Arctic Circle Trail thru-hikers (Sisimiut to Kangerlussuaq, 165km) are essentially off-grid for days.
How Much Data You Need
Greenland trips are typically 7-14 days combining Nuuk, Ilulissat (Icefjord) and possibly East Greenland or a southern Norse ruins visit. Data use is moderate in towns and irrelevant on the ice. 5-10 GB covers most trips.
Classic West Greenland (7 days)
5 GB easily handles WhatsApp with tour operators, Maps for Nuuk and Ilulissat, Northern Lights forecast apps, photo uploads from the Icefjord, and evening browsing. Hotel Wi-Fi covers heavy streaming.
Cruise expedition (10-14 days)
5 GB if your trip is mostly on a cruise ship with ship Wi-Fi (often included). The eSIM activates at port stops in Nuuk, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Qaqortoq etc. For uploading large quantities of Arctic photos, push to 10 GB.
East Greenland adventure (10-14 days)
Tasiilaq and Kulusuk have LTE coverage. Helicopter or boat travel between settlements is offline. 5 GB usually enough since most time is spent on activities (kayaking, glacier hiking) where you are off your phone anyway.
Activating Your Greenland eSIM
Purchase here, QR code emails in 1-2 minutes, scan into your phone at home before flying. The eSIM stays dormant until your phone connects to TELE-POST. Kangerlussuaq (SFJ, the main international gateway), Nuuk (GOH, the new international airport) and Ilulissat (JAV) all have full LTE at landing.
iPhone install
Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. Scan or open the email and tap. Label the line Greenland. Plan downloads in seconds.
Android install
Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Download a SIM Instead. Pixel and Samsung Galaxy work cleanly.
Data roaming toggle
Set the Greenland eSIM as default mobile data line, keep home SIM as default voice. Turn data roaming ON for the Greenland eSIM only. Without it the plan does not connect to local towers. Critical because Greenland is non-EU and your home SIM could rack up charges if left on.
Useful Apps in Greenland
WhatsApp dominates communication with hotels, tour operators and helicopter charter services. Google Maps handles all town navigation. There is no Uber or Bolt anywhere in Greenland - walking, hotel-arranged transfers or rental cars in Nuuk. Aurora forecast apps matter enormously during the Northern Lights season.
Aurora forecast (My Aurora Forecast, Auroras Now)
Essential from September through April. Greenland has some of the worlds best Aurora viewing because of low light pollution and high latitude. Real-time KP-index forecasts and cloud coverage maps tell you when to head out. The eSIM provides constant updates.
Hotels, tour operators, dog sled mushers, ice fjord boat captains and helicopter charter services all use WhatsApp. Voice notes work well across Danish/Greenlandic/English language preferences. Pre-load contacts before you fly.
Air Greenland and Disko Line
Air Greenland is the airline connecting settlements - flights are weather-dependent and can be cancelled. Disko Line runs boat connections between coastal towns. Both websites work on mobile for schedule checks and rebooking.
Before You Buy
Greenland uses Danish Krone (DKK). Cards are widely accepted in Nuuk and tourist hotels but cash matters in tiny remote settlements. The eSIM works the same regardless. A few practical notes specific to Greenland.
eSIM-compatible phone
iPhone XS or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer (most variants). Older phones can buy a TELE-POST SIM at the Nuuk post office or major settlement post offices with passport ID.
Extreme cold and battery life
Greenland in winter regularly hits -25 to -35 Celsius and the wind chill goes lower. Phone batteries drain rapidly in extreme cold. Keep your phone in an inner pocket close to body heat. The eSIM works the same regardless of temperature - the issue is battery, not signal.
